Hi,

Ive spent ****loads changing everything on my DSE in order to fix an overheating problem (when under load, ie when towing a boat or going uphill when its hot).

Today I did an experiment and bridged the 2 condersor fans so that they are always on. Guess what? Overheating problem seems to be cured.

So question is, should the fans come on when the engine gets hot (at the moment they dont) or do they only come on when high pressure detected on aircon?

Ive read conflicting posts, can someone please clarify. I cant make heads or tails out of the circuit diagram in Rave.

Thanks

Yes the fans are linked to the cooling system temp.
I have an aftermarket rad which solved my overheating problem a few years ago and is working fine with no problems.
Buying just genuine parts is an expensive game and are not all made by LR.

On the electrical circuit for the condenser fans nos. 1 & 2. If you want to be 100% sure they come on, why not fit a temperature SWITCH...look up Interpart...they come in different ranges and you could use it to switch the fans on via a normal N/O relay rated at 20 amps.
Don't have the RAVE disc here with me as I am over the UK, but I am sure someone will stick their head above the fence with the precise details.:behindsofa:

Its my understanding that the electric fans are for the air-con condensor and are used for that purpose only, they don't come on to cool the engine, that's the job of the viscous fan.

Don't know about the deisel models as I don't have access to the diagrams at the moment but the V8 definately does. The condenser fans can be forced on by the engine ECU diagnostics and not by the HEVAC.

I'm 99% sure that the condensor fans come on automatically once the temp reachs a set temp. However if that sensor is out of action or critically if you are using water instead of coolant then they might not come on in time.
In the RRC they used come on at 95 deg Celcius but my one had a faulty sensor. Like you I bridged it to solve my overheating prob but once I replaced the sensor it solved the problem.
I'm sure in the P38 manual it give sthe info about the fans.

Nope the manuals say nothing about the temp causing the fans to come on.
However, here's a hint, In the fault finding part of the manual it say "check condensor fans operating - See AC". When you read AC section it says they only come on with the AC? Its really bugging me.
The Petrol engine is a differenct beast, I know the petrol when overheated turns on the condenser fans.

I replaced the water temp sensor as well.
