you were never meant to, they just never had a good way to check. now they do and force the license.

legally, you never owned windows, you bought a license to use it and in general 1 license is 1 pc.

is it for home use? there are alternatives if they suit. like chromebooks, tablets or try linux os.

They are for the kids for xmas so want to stick to so want to stick to Windows really. It looks like buying 2 copies then. They're listing Windows 8 cheaper than 7. Have you got any experience of it? The kids are into Minecraft and our old one won't run it right.

win 8 not really no. my main one is nix and i just jump on the others when i need to do some stuff like using potatochop.

you can change 8 to feel a bit more like 7.

your old one won't run minecraft? the specs for it are pretty low.

minecraft uses java and so can run on win or nix, but in general nix is harder to use unless you are into computers. (no doubt others will disagree :D )

nix as in linux is superior to windows and very easy to use ;)

nix as in UNIX is superior to everything :)

You can buy a windows family pack which gives you licenses for 3 PC's.. You could buy a single retail license and use it to activate up to 10 PC's, and lock them all down so they cant call home to microsoft.. But then you get no windows updates or anything like that which isn't ideal.

I would avoid windows 8 at all costs, we have just rolled back about 3000 PC's from 8 to 7 at work because we couldn't find a single reason to use 8, the interface sucks, we hate it, users hate it, stuff doesn't work.. It's too much hassle.

Windows 8 is horrible and useless on a pc. It is designed for tablets.

Invest in 7 if it is available, we were forced into 8 on my wife's laptop, I got mine just before 8 came out so thankfully have 7

obviously not for 3k pc's, but have you personally tried the menu replacement tools like start8 on it? just wondering if that basically knocks it back to win7 or if there are other issues.

i still haven't got over the office ribbon interface change, can't find anything :D

We played around with it and it helps, but as you said not viable for us at work :)

If it was for myself, I would use start8, get the aero theme from 7 installed so it's not blocky solid colours, disable all the hot corners and the stupid login window and then see if there is a way to stop all windows 8 programs (sorry 'apps') from opening in full screen mode.. But at the end of the day thats a lot of bodging, and for some pretty core OS stuff, so I would still end up installing 7 I think

Bump pretty much hit the nail on the head, the idea behind windows 8 is that microsoft phones, tablets and PC's can all share the same OS and interface.. but it just doesnt work.. Utter sh*te
