Can everybody who has a disco 1 TDI 300 give their MPG as i am thinking mine is a bit too high, i am getting approx 22 MPG at the moment, but this has only been tested not very accurately when i put £15 worth of diesel in when the fuel light comes on, and resetting the trip counter, mine gets used mostly on short runs, maybe thats normal for short runs i don't really know ?

cheers

Only time I've had it that low was fully loaded, four adults and towing the caravan around North Yorkshire moors ... and booting it with no mercy!

Mostly I now get up to 35 mpg solo with about 28+ towing.

I've de-egr'd, de-catted, straight through centre piped it and tweaked the pump a tad .. ;)

Search the forum for details ....

wow 22mpg, Id be real worried if I was getting that after doing all of the usual - what was it before?
have you checked some of the obvious like : brakes sticking, fuel lift pump, do you have a big roof rack, extreme off road tyres etc?

To be honest mate you have no idea what your fuel consumption is, if you follow the method you outlined.

The only way to achieve an accurate fuel consumption test is to fill the tank until you can see the level in the neck of the fuel pipe, then do 400+ mls then fill again to the same level. Do that three or four times and average the results, then you'll have an accurate picture of mpg.

I have 235/70 16 BFG T/A tyres on the car, i changed the air/fuel & oil filter about a month ago and new oil,the handbrake seems nice and free when released, nothing really seems like it's binding, the MPG seemed better before the de EGR but i'm not sure what it was exactly, it could be anything really,i haven't noticed the smell of diesel under the bonnet when the car is running, i'm not sure apart from leaks by the tank maybe, i have noticed occaisionally some diesel marks below the fuel flap, on the rear quarter panel, but would that cause such a rubbish MPG, or would that be insignificant ?

I don't have the money to stick £60 in at a time i'm afraid, it just gets £10 or £15 a time

from just below 1/4 tank it takes about £80 to fill to the neck and i get about 430-450 miles before its back to the just below 1/4 level.

if that helps :)

My 200tdi manual will do about 28mpg but the wife's 300tdi auto will do about 22mpg (all short runs) and not much better on a run.
If you not like the low number's get a cheap little run around

Or zero the trip meter then leave it alone and keep putting £20 in it every time the fuel warning light comes on. Then when you've put £100 in it you'll have a pretty good idea of ya fuel consumption. :cool:

will do that i think

if i knew 22-25 MPG was normal then i wouldn't mind so much, it's the fact if there is something wrong with it that i can fix for say £30-£40 i don't see the point in ignoring it, if i can fix it and save a bit of cash, that in my mind would be a false economy

I've had 2 300TDI's and they both do about 28mpg. Lots of short runs push it up, best I ever got was a run across Ireland (not much traffic and no motorways so generally about 50mph) which delivered 36mpg. Long motorway run to Pembroke from London with 4 people and 4 sets of diving kit and doing 70 give or take returned 29mpg up till it stuffed a wheel bearing. The average then improved enormously cause the AA provided 100 miles worth of diesel.
Incidentally, only mod is blanking the EGR which frankly made no discernable difference to anything.
Manual transmission by the way.

Ya seem to be getting worried over nout. Ya aint got a clue what ya mpg is at the mo cause ya aint done any decent calcs. When you've done a test 2 or 3 times and got an average ya'll know, untill then ya just guessing.
If ya only putting in £15 a time it'll seem like it's drinking loads cause ya'll be forever topping it up. Dont take long to get through £15 of diesel.

I was just concerned something may be wrong after reading all the posts it seems like the norm, so it has put my mind at rest a little, there is nothing worse in my mind than wasting money when something can be fixed.

thanks everybody, i feel alot better about it now, you know how annoying it is, suspecting a problem, and ignoring it, only to find out you could have fixed it cheaply and saved some cash.

i know it's a big heavy car, and it has the aerodynamics of a brick, plus all the snail driving round town, changing up...down the gear range, and stopping probably adds to the consumption in a big way :)

thanks again

I usually get about 100 miles for £20. If money is that tight why dont ya try the old vegy oil I think you can still get it for around 80 p p/l

Before buying the TD5 which I now run, I had a '98 TDi 300 auto Disco which I did 16,000mls in about 1yr. This included:

a trip to the Sahara;
towing up to 2.5tons;
daily running around;

and it averaged over all those miles 33mpg.
