Hi. The cold start bulb on my 19£2 series 3 doesn't light up when I turn the ignition on but when I turn it over it flickers slightly but dim.

The car seats but takes quite a bit of turning over first and runs rough and very smoky until its warm.

Anyone got an idea as to if this is a bulb problem or a lack of power to the glow plugs and what solutions there are for this.

Many thanks.

Stumpy.

Series(original) or parallel(new style) heater plugs?
Blue/white & Brown/white wires are to the heater bulb, shown where thery connect to the balast resistor on the baulkhead..

Many thanks for that. I'll have a look. To be honest I do t think anything has ever been upgraded so will probably be the old ones. I'll have a check.

The other thing to check is the ignition switch, is it original?
I discovered mine was for a petrol engine (3 position) so wired it with a push button to the starter solenoid, it may be that your heaters are on with the starter motor, not good for fast starting.

Mine is 3 position. Off, aux then start. Bugger. Can I fit a heater switch or do I need a 4 position switch?

Scratch that. Just been on eBay and got a brand new 4 switch diesel barrel and key for £230 delivered.

Again, many thanks for the advice.

Just for clarity, what exactly is the correct & original set up here.

I can't recall if my ignition switch is a 3 or 4 stage one but glow plugs are switched on by holding the ignition key against the spring. After about 10 seconds of holding against the spring I just release and press a button on the dash in the middle. In fact there are two starter buttons there (both look the same and seem to both work the starter motor - not sure what that's all about!).

my 84 diesel has off, ign(warning lights on) then turn a bit further against spring for heater plugs (warning light comes on), then starter

the heater plugs take about 40amps each so they are best used before using the starter as both together would be a big battery drain
