Bit of a problem today i can engage 1st to 4th ok but i cant engage reverse without grinding and the clutch pedal feels very light. There is plenty of fluid in the resevoir so has anybody got any ideas as to whats wrong.

i've had the little catch that prevents accidental engaging of reverse gear jam before, that prevented me getting reverse gear but didnt involve any grinding noises. its an easy check though; if you look at the slots where the gear stick selects the gear (you'll need the transmission tunnel out) you should be able to see the spring held flap, mine was only held on with one screw and had gone squint preventing it from lifting. if your lucky you may hae a similar easily resolved fault!

Possible air due to something worn, try pumping the clutch a few times in succesion then try reverse.

Usually if the pressure plate goes it's the opposite heavy and crunchy gears, same if the plate is sticking on the gearbox shaft. So I would go for air in the system.

If pumping it works look for leaks, or if the slave cylinder is loose.

can you actually get it into reverse and when in no grinding?
the reverse selector pinch bolt could be loose, would need taking top off g/b to check
may be able to see condition of teeth on reverse gear when off

Mine usually crunches a bit. Try reving up a bit with your foot on the clutch.

This can stop the crunch, well it does for me.... give it a go!

Thanks for all your suggestions everybody. Turns out the slave cylinder was goosed to changed it today and everything working fine now.
