I drove my 2001 TD4 with a caravan the other day, all fine until the reversing.
I had to get it in between some trees so I needed to do some full locks and reversing.
I know even on it's own, full lock seems to have a resistance when driving or reversing.
Anyway, I got the caravan to where I wanted it, but... a smell as if the clutch had burnt out, smoke coming from the engine compartment.
I let it cool down a couple of hours and gave it a drive without caravan. Now it is clunk clunk clunk at the back axle.
I can drive it, but the back judders like no ones business.
What do you think the problem is?

Oh dear.. Expensive then?
Would it be better to de- 4WD it? Cheaper at least?

Removing the props and VCU will reduce the chance of further damage being caused to the IRD and rear diff. Does the clutch now judder? Clutch judder can often be a result of overheating the friction material particularly if the clutch is nearing the end of it's working life.

Next job when I get to the car (I am away from it for 2 weeks) is to remove the prop and vcu.
I will let you know what is happening then.
Thanks for the replies Nodge and James.

Something judders.. but it appears to be at the back of the car. The clutch pedal seems to have gone down a few inches.. only driven it a couple of miles, and apart from the judder at the back.. and some squeaky noises (brakes are suspect) it seems to drive ok ish.
