Clutch problems - please help!!

hey guys,

been signed up for a while now but never posted since ive not managed to get myself a landy yet as im still a student, bummer.

anyway, i borrowed my dads td4 freelander so i could do a weeks placement for uni and after driving 260 miles up to glasgow fine, i went to drive it later that day and had loads of clutch problems.
basically the pedal kept getting stuck and it wouldnt go into gear at all, had the RAC out and he said ''clutch system requires re-bled and fluid change, fluid looks to be water contaminated''
so i had it towed into a local garage and they carried out the above and said that it was going into gear, but would need the slave doing soon.
drove it back to my flat in glasgow and it was no different after the first mile or so.
the master and clutch were replaced 2 months ago and the cars done 130k miles

the tow in and re-bleeding clutch system was £84 inc VAT (dad reconed this was about right) and am i right in saying you need to take out the gearbox to get to the slave?

any help would be really appreciated as my dads away in amsterdam on business and its down to me, and being only 20 with not much mechanical knowledge i dont want to get ripped off by the garage!

thanks every so much,

tom

Before you start biting the hand that feeds you, you may want to have a look at how this forum works. Mickey taking and banter are all part and parcel of it. You'll get the info you want but you'll also get the mickey taken. I suggest you find yourself either a rhino skin coat or a sense of humour.;)

If the clutch cylinders were only done 2 months ago I'd be taking it back to the garage under warranty.:welcome2:

And please refrain from swearing outside of anything goes.

yeh ok fair point, my bad.

well, been a member for a while now, but dont own a landy of my own, and im borrowing my dads td4 for the week and been driving it a bit over the summer.

dont know a great deal about car mechanics but being a country lad im obsessed with landys, and hoping i'll be able to join the forum properly when i get one!

apologies for not introducing myself properly, just pretty worried about garages ripping me off seeing as i dont really know what im talking about and rushed the post a bit!

sorry for getting off to a bad start here guys! and yeh ive got a decent sense of humour, it just felt like it was pick on the newbie time (which it normally is in forums so fair enough) and yeh your right i was a bit of a dick just posting and expecting help.

it was the clutch and master cyclinder that were replaced, the slave hasnt been touched in 130k miles since it came off the line, and having done a bit of reading, sounds like it might be the problem?

It has a concentric slave I believe,I'm surprised it wasn't done- you need to check as I would expect it to be done with clutch

Fairy nuff....................slave would be favourite :welcome2:

 I'd be still taking back to the garage where the clutch was done and informing them they're a bunch of f?%king Cnuts for not changing the slave whilst the gearbox was out for the clutch........why on earth wouldn't you change the slave at the same time when the cars got that milage on it.
Just do a quick check that the linkage from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder hasn't shifted to one side of the shaft it attaches to on the clutch pedal.

Just had the full job done on mine - see a post here somewhere.

Had slave, clutch and Dual mass flywheel done

Approx £650 in parts and £265 labour ( also had wheel bearing done in that price) so it's an expensive job and that was with aftermarket parts and a very reasonable mechanic.

Angeloc.......Did the new flywheel get rid of yer shimmy?

No it didn't !!! But having replaced so much stuff on it the shimmy is now feeling more like a miss! Seriously I reckon it now has to be an injector or a sticky valve lifter. It has got a lot better after I put an additive in the oil to help with sticky lifters.

I am going to run it a bit and hopefully get around to swopping out an injector one by one. I have a spare which I think I will get reconditioned for the purpose.

I want to do the leak back test but without buying special kit - I have bottles and pipe but haven't worked out how to attach the pipe to the outlets on the injectors.

Ha ha vet you are sorry you asked now and apologies for taking up this thread.

Hey, what's wrong with being a lonely old man watching cartoons??????????????

For a good garage just outside the southside of Glasgow I recommend Rowan Garage Services in Rowan Street, Paisley (01418892844). The only thing is that they're not the cheapest of garages, but they are much cheaper than a main dealer & they will not under any circumstances rip you off. If you really are very tight on budget then you might have to take a chance elsewhere but if your dads stumping up for repair & you want someone reliable then they are good guys.

If you wanna learn what a concentric slave is.............google is your friend.

If the clutch felt fine on the car before the journey and its fine after its been bled. Then its air ingress / hydraulic fluid loss.

I'm going to guess the garage had a quick check in your drivers footwell to see if there was clutch fluid dripping down the clutch pedal. After that they would have inspected the union above the gearbox to see for fluid leaks, if it isnt there, then its your slave...... pretty much :p

Signs would be goldeny fluid / wet patch on bottom of gearbox bellhousing.

End result : Get out your wallet and hope when they inspect the clutch they dont recommend a Flywheel :)
