Hi folks. Have just changed the clutch in my Freelander 1.8. just started it up and it won't go in gear with the engine running, can just about get reverse. It goes in fine without. The biting point for the clutch is on the floor. This must be the slave cylinder, right? which I'm guessing took a pounding from the old heavy clutch. I can't think of anything else. Anyone got any ideas or advice?

Thanks

Martin

If its the same set up as the L series (which I think it is) then have a really good look at the bracket that holds the slave cylinder. Its really flimsy and bends and cracks causing this problem

Thanks, I'll take another look in the morning, it has thethe brac on the gearbox .I was in a rush to get finished, I didn't really look too hard at it when I put it back on

I can't understand what's going on, the slave cylinder and mount seem to be ok. Im wondering wether the gearbox needs to come off again but I'm still not sure what problem I'm looking for

I'd get someone to press the clutch peddle while you watch the slave and clutch release arm. Assuming the clutch is mounted correctly on the bracket, make sure the slave isn't moving (backwards) and that the release arm is turning OK.

If the arm is turning OK then its something inside the bell housing. If the arm is not moving correctly then lubricate it (where it goes through the bell housing) and/or check the mounting and operation of the slave.

Thanks for this, All seems ok with the slave cylinder and bracket, moving and no movement in the bracket. There did look to be a very tiny bit of fluid on the cylinder shaft at the seal, but it doesn't really look like it is leaking, it may be from some other source. I might replace it anyway just to rule it out, although it worked for the old clutch, other than that, i can only think to take the gearbox off again to see if I can work out what's going on.

I may be getting confused with something else but i think master/pipe/slave come as a unit on this model

Try spacing the slave away from the bracket more. This will eliminate lost motion in the system. Also make sure the release lever is well lubricated.
