Clunk from the rear.

When i change down to 2nd gear to turn a corner in either direction, when i come off the clutch to re-engage drive i get a audible clunk from the rear, it sounds like a diff mount and it only does it when i have coasted to the turn and then come off the clutch.

It doesnt do it in a straight line, only when there has been load on either side of the car.Its in on the 9th for them to look at it under warranty but i would like to be able to point them in the right direction before i get the '' Cant find a problem sir '' comment.

Its an 02 TD4 Manual(5 Door)

Hi the Zippy. . .very hard to tell on this one as so many factors,most favorite might be ,mounting pads on [vcu] the freelander is on normal roads a front wheel drive, however when on tricky surfaces a rev measure of i/p and o/p will kick in the [vcu] hence 4 wheels ,however assume your on a normal road , so next could be the universal joints [think you have 3]but a clunk noise could be the rear drive shaft. . .as you can tell very hard to pin point , more feed back on this one. . .hope you get it sorted Zip. . .Ming :cool:

Hi Ming,

And I, in all my ignorance thought it was an "all-time" 4wd with, under normal conditions some 94% to the front and 6% of the power to the rear wheels ??:cool: :cool:
 
Your correct Willo but i was just giving a rough guide as to not drag the complex subject out . . . Ming :cool:
 
Isn't there some place an item mentioning that a bracket of the rearsuspension can break off causing such kind of clunk??
 
Thanks Willo and Ming, i will keep you posted as to what they find, i gave the car some beans today off the line to see if i could get it to happen and it was fine (in a straight line) but still there when turning and coming off the clutch in 2nd, in 3rd its fine so its got something to do with the jolt of the lower gear hitting the drive train on power take up.

I'm hoping its something simple like a bush or link arm but hey the warranty runs out in March so i'm soooo glad it happened now.

not having a freelander i might not be of much help here but have you washed it recently? as i've heard that can cause problems with the freelander
 
Good man the Zip, get it sorted mate , hey that was a good link from the Willo the freelanders only forum ,check it out and guess wot they take freelanders orft roading in the outy back place, a very good site . . .so eat my nuts tractor boys. . . Ming :cool:
 
Zippy . . . If that clunk gets really bad, go on de tractor zone, they have camouflage cushions for sale[ oh sorry you've a freelander and wont need them]. . . Ming :cool:
 
LOL @ Ming.

Maybe me putting the rear wash wipe on a few times over Christmas has caused the clunking problem :p what with all that water all over it.

Stop it Zippy you will only encourage them,and a clunk in a tractor don't make no real deal, as they wont hear it anyway. . .Ming :cool:
 
Problem sorted:

It was the rear, top diff mount that needed changing, all is well again with the wifes toy.(Done under warranty)

had the same clunk with my freelander 2000 year. Did you find the exact problem and have it fixed?
