L322 Climate control fan problem

Yep - the 'Hedgehog' as it is known is more correctly the Final Stage Resistor. This is the device that supplies power at varying levels to the fan motor as determined by the rotary dial on the HEVAC control panel.

They are known to go bad and either a) the motor is full chat regardless or (more commonly) b) no fan motor at all.

They are also a common cause of battery drain issues.

Relatively easy to get at if you have moderate sized hands and are a bit flexible...if you are neiter, it is more of a faff but still accessable with more swearing and back pain.
 
Great. Thanks. Do we have a link to the equivalent of RAVE for the L322 on here? I have large hands, which was awkward enough checking the fuses, but i’m up for trying most things. I could with a pointer on the procedure though.

Yes thats what most call it. In my post 6 is another pic and its LR name.
Although they are a common fail you need to check it is getting battery voltage and earth. not sure how to check the control voltage (yet).
But have you checked all the other fuses in the dia as there are 1s that power the "climate control module switch pack".
Also the earth to that.

Time to get the DMM out, and hunt down the connectors:) C2281 is on the heater box guessing righthand side but its close to the "hedgehog":).

That’s awesome. Thanks V8 - if I get stuck I could pop up for some advice, you can’t be far from me. One more quick question. google search for these revealed many LR part numbers for the part id in the diagram. How do i find the right one? Or are they actually all the same?

I think I did check that one as it looked promising, and I was clutching at straws by then too. I’ll try and get to the part to check the voltages.

I ordered this one. JGO000021.C8

However, two things have happened since then. Firstly, having paid for my order as i placed it, they then cancelled it - I have no idea why.

Then, today, while returning from a local journey the blower suddenly burst into life and everything is working normally! How and why has this happened?

Do hedgehogs display intermittent failures when giving up the ghost? Or am instead hunting for a random short or another component?

Should I re-order the hedgehog in the near certainty that it it is only a matter of time before it gives up completely or does the returning functionality eliminate the hedgehog as the culprit?

Corroded connectors or a dodgy hedgehog.
 
It can be intermittent when they are on there way out, or as Datatek say - loose/corroded connection.

I ask as I have a hedgehog I took out of a 2005 heater box I bought secondhand as I wanted the heater matrix from it and also to see if I could find a workaround to get the matrix out without removing the whole heater box!

just about to change out the climate control unit in the centre console (again)
have ordered a new porcupine resistor (the spines are bigger than a hedgehog) in the hope this might stave the sudden battery drain issue and also stop the CC unit from burning out. Still got to check out some other relays as gap is pointing out an a/c relay short to earth. whether it turns out to be the solenoid on the a/c causing problems time will tell. have never turned the aircon on so don't know whether it works or not and don't know if it works in conjunction with heating in the car...
