clicking on front wheel when freewheeling?

seems to be in a staight line.. whats the CV if you don't mind me asking??
Also.. can anyone tell me, wen checking a wheel bearing; if one was broken how much play would i actually feel when rocking the wheel?? is it very easy to tell or is i just a slight play??
 
CV is a bit like a UJ but has ball bearings - joins front diff to drive member and allows rotation and turning

Bit of a **** description:eek:

Wheel bearing - depends on how bad - best to move wheel up/down and left/right and compare movement to brake disc - they're should be very little!
 
CV = constant velocity joint, keep it simple, another style of universal joint. Universal joints when they're on a prop shaft, constant velocity joint on a half shaft, should be covered with a plastic boot.

On the wheel bearings, with the wheel in the air if you can feel any movement (top to bottom) more than you would expect from the tyre flexing then you've got to suspect the wheel bearing.
 
ah right then.. the CV joint, how would i check this, is it a case of getting hold of both ends twwisting and looking for play??

Back to wheel bearings.. on one of the wheels theres a very very very slight play and a clicking noise when moving it up and down.. now would this be normal or should i suspect wheel bearin?

keep it simple??? that just confuses things by saying a cv joint should be covered by a plastic boot???

this is the defender forum, the cv joint lives inside the swivel housing bathed in oil or one shot grease, to access and change it you need to strip the housing...there is no rubber boot ,

you will find rubber boots on modern front or 4wd stuff when the vehicle does not have a solid beam axle, the only rubber boots on a fender are worn by the farmer driving it, certainly not on a cv

and as for your movement, is it play up down left and right... if so its wheel bearing, if the play is up and down only then swivel pin is worn, check your preload while working on it
