I went through some big muddy puddles on a mates farm last night, this morning I opened the bonnet and could not see the engine for mud!

Would it harm anything to get a hose in there and wash it all out?

if its a 300TDi - then no - it wont harm - i pressure wash the enjin bay after a trip. - be careful of alternator/ air conn compressor tho - mud goes thro bearing in no time.

on that note - wot do yu guys reckon - best to wash out alternators to get rid of mud (with it orf, of course) or to leave it full of mud?

I pressure wash mine clean, then with the engine running spray it with light oil, 3-in-1 or something similar. Don't have many problems with it, changed one in 70000 miles. Got it with 55k on clock, now done 125k, changed it last year with 118000 on clock .. and it regularly gets waded/mudded up .. ;)

I intend to remove the viscous fan next year and replace it with a switchable electric fan to try to stop so much water and mud getting thrown around the engine bay.

get in there with the jet wash, not sure about pouring oil into the alt though, tdi's pretty bombproof

LOL, what Sean says ... I use a spray can and spray a small amount of light oil into the alternator housings at each end. In theory it'll help dispel excess water and lubricate the bearings after the pressure wash has washed all the ****e away.

Didn't stop my last alternator chewing a bearing, but it was quite old being original equipment, so probably due a change ... ;)

The only thing remotely affected in the alternator will be the brushes, the bearings are sealed, so spraying oil won't do anything any good, particularly the brushes....

Washing out is marginally better than leaving all the cr*p inside the alternator, as the windings need air flow for cooling.
