Classic vents

Saturday was a cold & windy day & I became aware of a cold draught emulating from the dashboard as I was driving & realised that the cold air was coming from the dash vents (two off as no A/C, '87 RRC) despite the vents not being selected with the heater air distribution lever. The heater itself is working ok so I'm assuming that 31 years of use has resulted in the foam backing on the internal flaps controlling the airflow has disintegrated. Closing the dash vents themselves does reduce the draught, but I can still feel some cold air so is there a fix without removing the entire dashboard to gain access to the heater unit?

Mine was 89, had dash out to change heater matrix couple months later was getting hot air through vents in summer so out it all comes again !

Based on my non aircon 1986 if these are the two vents that point into the car immediately to the right & left of the clock they don't supply hot air, only cold air when the lever on the left of your heater controls that goes up & down is either open or closed. That lever has an O (meaning off) at the bottom of its travel & a pic of the vent at the top.

I never found a way in the 10 years of ownership of shutting the off the cold air from those two vents, even when the shutters were closed and the heat directed to the floor there was still a cold draft out of the vents. It a long while ago but if I remember right the heater directions are windscreen, floor or in between the two.

Come to think of it, my RR heating was pathetic, compared with the disco that replace it

Your description is correct. The entire system has always worked efficiently with the controls doing their job in giving me cool air from the dash vents, but only when the LH lever was moved to the top (vent pic) position. Obviously age is now causing that cold air to 'leak' past the flaps even when closed. I'll have to devise something for the winter though as I've no intention of dismantling the dash-board, especially with the heater working as it should.

That's strange, my heater works fine & all the fan speeds as well. There are occasions when the vacuum/servo operated air flap under the dash doesn't open straight away, but switching on the fan briefly usually cures the problem. Why LR didn't retain the (pre '86) original simple lever actuation device instead of complicating things for the '87 model year is beyond me

Further to my post asking advice about cold air 'leaking' out the dash vents/louvres (even when the air flap is closed) brings me to question how the vents themselves are fitted into the dash. Do they simply press in or is there more to it? When the manuf. w/s manual explains how to remove the dash-top itself it simply states 'remove the louvres'
