hello there. does any one in this section of the forum own or have any experience with the old classic range rovers? i have been offered a 1993 3.9 v8 range rover with all the trimmings for EUR 4000. is it worth it or are they more trouble than they are worth?
 
i have to say, appart from some scuffed and worn paint and an interior that looks as though it was flayed from fuzzy bears back, it looks to be in good nic. full service history and relatively low miles.

I've enjoyed driving a 1993 LSE for over 5 years now. Fantastic vehicle and very little trouble. Deals with the Polish roads and winter weather a treat. 4,000 Euro seems a fair price if it's ok. I would say go for it but check the electrical systems first. Also the rear tailgate tends to rust but mechanically they are bomb proof
 
Main things to check for on Classic are: rust, rust and rust (did I mention rust?)

Look at the front inner wings, sills, footwells, rear cross member, rear seat belt mounts in the wheel arches and the boot floor under the insulation. These are all well known rust spots, but can be prevented by care and attention and cured if caught early enough.

Also check for overheating/head gasket. If the temperature gauge goes over half-way under normal driving, then there's a problem with the radiator - they can silt up. Simple check is to feel the top and bottom hoses. If there's a big temperature different, then the rad is silting up

Check the viscous coupling. Simple way is to give it full lock on loose ground and see if the tyres scuff which could indicate that the coupling has seized.

Also check for damp carpet in the front footwells. If it smells of coolant, then the heater matrix is leaking, if it's plain water, then it's likely to be the door seals

Despite the above (which I've learnt the hard way with mine), they're an awesome motor and I wouldn't swap mine for anything. That said, remember it's a 15 year old vehicle and will need some TLC.

In the UK, I'd say that 4000 Euro is over the top. I'd look to be paying just over half that here for a good mint one

On the subject of checking the electrics, make sure the alternator is in good order. A fault on the alternator can cause all sorts of headaches and will take ages to find. I would suggest get the voltage regulator, brushes and slip rings changed.

Try and find out if the mileage is low, why it is low - could mean it has been a "problem" motor, but equally it could be that it has only been used on Sundays!
 
Hi, I have just paid £1500 for a gas converted se vogue , 160000 miles with full service history (new tailgate , new viscous coupling , new springs all round , cam shaft overhauled , etc. ) two owners from new ( first owned by m.d. of vickers plc in japan , so its a jap import !!!).
 
Right: the origional asking price was 4500 EUR and as most folk pointed out this was too high for an old range rover. also the want adds in landy mags and auto trader confirmed that i could take the 4500, fly back home to the uk, buy a range rove and drive back and still have change left over.
 
It is impractical to go back to the uk and do all that however so i hammered on at the landrover dealers for a reduction. the trouble is, cars over here are just expencive. i don't know what it is about England that makes second hand cars so cheap.

It has the 3.9 v8, air suspension, electric everything, aircon, cruize control. its had 2 owners from new, has 107,000 miles on the clock, FULL service history, i mean EVERY stamp in the book.
 
I have got them down from 4500EUR to 3700EUR + new MOT, full service including all new fluids throughout, new set of snow tyres (about 1200 EUR)
full vallet, gear box service and a full tank of fuel.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS RECON? is it worth it?????
 
It still seems expencive to me but it is a beauty and will have over a grands worth of winter tyres fitted. still not sure though
