Have you circumcised your front bumper on your disco 1?

I have the original bumper on my disco 300 tdi and the problem with it was that it hindered ground clearance too much. On one afternoon, I decided to take a grinder to it and chopped off the bottom half of it. Only downside is that I no longer have fog lights, but one of them didn't work anyway...

It now looks more like this: (minus the mounting bar under the grill and minus the sump guard)

Anyone else done this?

yep, did that then smashed the front end up on a Nissan, Insurance company paid for my nice 4mm steel winch bumper - that was good of em.

Isn't that the first thing you do when you buy a disco 1?

I found out the hard way that they get in the way when off roading when my first outing ripped it off anyway.

My latest purchase came with it already cut down for me. :)

Its ether a case of right off or lots more on, for me , depending on the usage of the vehicle.

Those plastic ends are bloody useless anyway. The only real use for the lower spoiler is to hold the foglights on a road-only truck. Im still looking for an Epsom green D2 front to go on my japspec D1 cos I only use it for roads and caravans and Im sick of bending all the end bits back after the rigours of driving to Trago and back down our lanes in the Duchy.

Just bought a (rotten) disco...was looking at that front end, cant be arsed cutting it, think i'll remove completely and stick a steering guard on. Are there any sharp edges etc on the front once removed that could catch the MOT mans eye, in a manner of speaking?

Only the mounting bracket for the fog lights which can be removed completely.

I found it was weirdly better for fuel comsuption with it off.

Less drag and more cooling perhaps, but wouldn't have thought it would make much difference though!

Wouldn't mind doing it - looks good!
Any tips on how to do it???

Cheers

Just take an angle grinder to it and follow the half way line. Take a look at it before you do it and you will see just where you need to cut, it's very easy. I didn't even need to mark it out on mine.

If you have fog lamps attached, it might be easier just to cut off the mounting brackets with bolt cutters once they're exposed. (chances are they will be pretty rotten anyway) As for the wiring, just disconnect the fuse or switch and tape up the exposed ends with gaffatape. There's a few nice little holes in the chassis which you can use to tuck the 2 cables into, job done.

It's a bit of a bodge admittedly but it's easy to do and looks good. It only takes around half an hour.

dont need a grinder, did mine with a hacksaw blade.

the centre section will unbolt from the bumper if you can be bothered but after half a dozen bolts mine just came away with ease.

Same here when i did mine just took the whole center of the lower bumper off... why cut it, then as you say hacksaw, follow the already marked out line on the end caps.......job done.... no noise no cost :D:D

hacksaw blade just kept gettin bunged up with melted plastic...
