I'm a bit paranoid about this. I bought some of the wrington stainless steel nuts. They look nice but you cannot visibly see if the are becoming loose because they are closed ended. I when I remove wheel nuts I put them on the drivers seat as a precaution and reminder. I always re torque after a few miles too.
It's so easy to forget to tighten them though

I always check my wifes wheel nuts on her car after she has new tyres! Over cautious? Paranoid? Maybe but it does reassure me after an earlier experience with a tyre shop proved you can never assume

had a good wander this morning as there seemed to be few cars parked on the route I took, managed to find both missing nuts, so now I have a new full set I didn't need to buy, still I guess £9 isn't the end of the world.

stuck them in the box under the passenger seat in case I ever do it again :D

trouble is I think a lot of modern cars have self tightening nuts so you forget the old ones don't
Self tightening nuts how does that work? In the old days lorries had R/H thread wheel nuts on nearside and L/H thread wheel nuts on off side. That is as near to self tightening i have seen. Never ever saw a loose wheel nut back in the day. They were absolute bastards to get undone when changing wheels around on an eight legger. No air tools back then.

could have been someone feeding me bollocks I suppose :D

have heard of that left thread on one side before, recall someone telling me about lorries needing them going over those windy mountain passes in Europe to stop one side loosening. Could well have been more crap :D

occurs to me, if a second set of nuts is used - just ordinary flat ones without the groove for the wheel hole - would they act as locking nuts?
