Disco 2 Wheel/Tyre Options

I thought it became clear unill now which are the standard dimensions(shown in that table i posted from the workshop manual) ... anyway, my vote is 3 for your latest conditions

Thanks. Yep I think the middle one was non standard and if so it's simply 1 or 3, which I think need different width wheels. But that's fine, as I have someone with a set of 8Js I could grab locally. Mind if I ask what you'd say if someone asked why you'd choose 255/65 over 235/70? (Now that I know the main/only difference is width of rubber on road and not a sidewall issue at all!)

Because i've had them both on my vehicle and IMO the ride on 255/65 was better

great thanks. Always seems to me the extra rubber should make it less "rolly" and aid grip especially in the wet, but guesswork really. Gonna see what these wheels are when they arrive and if needed, get some 8J wheels to follow your vote I think. The only point I can think of against that is that my steering seems a bit heavy and struggling, thats probably just due to worn tyres, but could be a weak pump, in which case it needs replacing anyway so i would rather choose the best tyres for driving and upgrade other bits if needed. The pressures must also be like in that doc i posted... if the steering is heavy with standard tyres at recommended pressures then something is wrong... start by spraying WD40 on the column's UJ

I assume you're only talking about what people refer to as 'over size', i.e. bigger than LR specs? The funniest thing of all is my 04 Disco2 did (I am pretty sure) come with the 18" wheels as standard. But I wonder what the insurance database would say about that, or VOSA etc, as if you go on Camskill and enter my reg, it doesn't offer any 18" tyres cos it thinks my vehicle should have 16" tyres, hence 16" wheels. If "profile" meant sidewall height then it would be false. But the poster clearly meant lower profile in terms of a lower aspect ratio - which is the usual meaning and indeed, how it is expressed on the sidewall. So the statement was true.

You are definitely over thinking this. In the real world I doubt you will notice any significant difference between 255, 245 or 235 width on similar diameter tyres. The 235s just look a bit skinny on a D2 IMHO.

thanks. not too fussed with looks (18"s look great, just drive like a cart ) although I can imagine what you mean especially with the arch trims on D2s. Will have wheels soon so will double check the width. I think my friend said you can't see when tyre is on as it's under the tyre, but that seems a bit silly so i am hoping its on the back somewhere. Will know at the weekend, then I can see what my options are. I read about 25-30 threads last night and whilst just cos someone else does something, doesn't mean its "right" to do it, but quite a few people said they had 255 width on 7J wheels. Don't know why, when landy states different, but maybe landy specs are just what the OEM choices are, as opposed to safe limits. If there is any safety issue with 255s on 7Js, I will get some 8Js (P38 RR maybe).

Sierrafery (and any others).... I really appreciate your advice on the 255/65. I also just (oddly) had a call from a good friend who I forgot drove a Disco2 for many years until quite recently. Had a good chin wag and his opinion (having tried tons of wheel/tyre combinations) was exactly the same as yours. What he actually said was "I would never consider 235/70 over 255/65, no comparison in my opinion, 255/65 is the only one I would even consider. Lovely ride and grip, best combination all round". My 7J wheels are on their way to me (too late to cancel!) so I will just stick some mud tyres on those when I find some cheap used ones locally, and have them as a spare fun set.

Given your experience, I wondered if you might have a similar go to option for tyres? I read 5hit loads of reviews and researched as well as I could, and I had decided on BFG AT KO2s for my day to day tyres (255/65/16). Before I plump for that, I just wondered if you or anyone else thinks there is a better choice for similar purpose of mainly road but able to go off road if needed? My friend who just called said BFGs are good but he stuck with Gen Grabber ATs and said they are quieter on the road than BFG ATs. Not sure if that's true of the newer KO2s, but either way, just wondered if anyone cared to comment, is there a better choice than BFG AT KO2?

BFGs or GGs are not the choice IMO, these are mainly off-road tyres, for your conditions i'd recommend Goodyear Wrangler HP AW 255/65 R16

Thanks. The intentions have slightly changed with all my wheel swapping etc. Basically put. I am now looking for an all rounder. I will start a thread as i have quite a specific choice after realising the reduced options with 255/65/16, so i may just do a poll of my options. thanks again

That is a 27" wheel, far too small and not at all standard for D2s which take a 29" as standard. 245/70/16 is commonly available and only fractionally taller than standard, the circumference is less than 2% larger and you will not notice the difference.

Sorry, my mistake. I want 255/65/16, not 55 aspect ratio.
