Hi Guys and Gals,

Anyone know of a place to get a cheap respray, will travel.

Basically once ive finished replacing all the very rusty bits im going to have a patchwork landy.

Soooooo looking for a very cheap way (bar halfords spray cans) to get her re-done.

I am looking to do all the manual stuff (probably under guidance) e.g: strip the panels of, key it , etch prime where i go through to the metal take the inside and windows out, basically get it to a stage that i can roll it into a spray bay and they can start the work immediately.

Im thinking gun metal grey (metallic) anyone know of a place? or had a cheap (good) job done.

Yes i know cheap and good doesn't normally go hand in hand.

Depends what you call cheap. Earlier this year when I was in the market for a re spray, the cheapest started at about £900 and went to about £3500 for concours ish

Thing is, preparation is key. Why would you want to etch prime it yourself (I assume via aerosol) and then pay someone to apply a top coat. The top coat finish will dependent on the quality of the prep.
A satin finish is much more forgiving than a full gloss. Might be something to consider.

In my experience, there's no middle ground between a DIY job, like roller painting, which can be done for under a hundred quid, and a proper spray shop job, for which prices normally start around a grand.

It's annoying I know, but unfortunately, that's how it is I think.

Yeah i spoke to a local car respraying company who advised the same thing about the metallic v satin. Metallic also being £100 more for the materials.

The chap there mentioned about the etching using an aerosol, if i do all the prep work and its ready to roll in then it's £600 + vat (£720) for him to spray and lacker. I did the obvious cash in hand offer but he said he can't. So £720 is the cheapest by a profesional.

I agree, the preparation is key.

I guess the cheapest option would actually be for me to spray it matt black. Just need a compressor and space. At least matt will mask the mistakes compared to me spraying it with gloss.

Decisions decisions,

At present it's £720 or buying a compressor and trying to find a big indoor space. I would love to see her in gun metal grey though.

Are you going to get the car all muddy and scratchy ( as intended) if so cheap and cheerful. If its going to be a pimped up ride then splash the cash. Simple.

Get a half decent compressor and do it your self. Satin is really easy to paint, It really isn't hard to pick it up and get a decent finish. As is said prep is the key to a good finish and mixing the paint correctly once that is in order It really isn't hard. Good primers are not expensive if you are using and gun ether. Try and borrow a compressor or rent maybe an option.

Then learn to polish and correct and you can turn some crap jobs into good ones.

When you get to thd clear coat stage what did you use to polish it out with? As thats a good job

last time i sprayed with a gun it was with celly.. isn't all the new stuff water based now and you really need a oven to get it to cure?

That was done with with with Hexlogic pads, 3 different grades of 3m and Menzerna polishes. I didn't paint it, it was a customers car I just corrected it, it had been painted and blended to about half way down the door. You wouldn't need to go through all that to for a land rover unless you was looking for perfection. 2000 wet and dry and 3M Fast Cut plus, a cutting pad and a finishing polish or glaze on polishing pad you should be able to get most ****ty jobs looking decent. And if you really don't care 2000s and G3 with a wool pad will get it looking flat.

This was the GTR hacked up with g3 before.

No, you can buy any paint you want as customer, the whole water based thing is for company's etc as far as I'm aware. The paint I'm using on my Disco is cellulose, you can still buy 2K paints etc all the paint shops I know still sell it all

Cellulose is so easy to use, I'm only using an old £50 tankless hobby compressor and A constant bleed £15 gun. It is little orange peely upfront these are poor pictures. But If I turned the paint flow down, and didn't use it so thick it would be a lot smoother. I heated the panels too as it is so cold it was running on first go of the the wings. Took about 15-20 minutes to dry and then the doors was refitted, but it is tacky dry in a few minutes so you can give it further coats.
