hi all just a bit of news ASDA is selling Castrol oil 4 ltrs for £12 they have semi and full synthetic, but do not have the 5w/30 as it is A1/B1 and you need A3/B3. as the A1/B1 is for brand new cars with very little mileage on . and it could do some damage to your engine at high temperatures. I leant this out today after phoning Castrol and the w after the 5 means winter, and she also said I would be best if I used the 10/40s
hope this helps someone out .

I'm after 10/40 mineral oil, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find these days and when I find it it's expensive stuff :(
 
opie oils lists the freelander TD4 as using the a1/b1 ford type oil , Its also a5/b5 if you look on the label so should be safe ?


ACEA A1/B1

ACEA A1 / B1 specification is intended to be used in petrol engines (normally cars and vans) or light duty diesel engines with an extended service interval. The A1 / B1 specification directly indicates that the oil has low friction, high temperature / high sheer characteristics, ideal for the older type engines.

I've got 2 or 3 gallons of Castrol R40 that no one wants, had it about 10 years now so it probably gone off, stick a bit in the landy tank now and then :)

I think they used to put it in Scooby diffs, sold about twenty gallons to a mate years ago

No I can't use agricultural oil. It has to many detergents for my use. I need a cheap as chips mineral oil which don't appear to exist any more.

definitely NOT to be used in a car with over 30,000 miles on the clock this is directly from Castrol if you have over 60,000 then you can use 10/40 they produced this oil so should know.
and the halfruads stuff has gone off sale
 
My owners manual for my 2000 TD4 does state 10w-40 acea A3/B3 but all the oils seem to be A3/B4 now , Like Castrol GTX & magnatec ?

Looking how thin my dads oil for his VW was ( 5w-40 fully synthetic to VW 505.01 spec ) I think I might change to 10w-40 semi on my 14 year old 75k TD4 from now on :eek:

The TD4 engine was built in the late 90's wasn't it ?
 
Td4 X registration November 2000 :)

Just saying that BMW built the td4 engine about 1999 & only used it upto 2002 in there cars , But used up the engines in the freelander till 2006 .
So @ 15 years it is an old diesel engine !

I struggle to believe that you need to change the type of oil significantly as the mileage increases. I also struggle to get cheap mineral oil these days, I rebuilt the engine in my Triumph Spitfire a few years ago and I still don't think it has run in properly after 6,000 miles with modern oils. Thinking of trying Fry Crisp and Dry....

I've always been of the view that it is more important how often you change the oil, rather than the exact oil type.
 
Well I just filled mine this morning with some Comma X-Flow 5w40 fully synth for VW PD engines- meets VW505 01 which is good enough for me and should be fine for the M47 engine. I do roughly 7-8k changes so I'll go for the same stuff buy the BMWLL rated stuff. I just had this oil already lying around, and the engine loves it. Purrs now.. but most of that is thanks to changing the tensioner pulley!!
