Im after a cheap GPS system for when green laning/off roading. I have got OS maps on my iPad but would like to have a GPS system to cross reference where I am e.t.c.

Im not after an all singing affair, more just co-ordinates, a basic map screen and some waypointing maybe...

I use Memory map on my iPhone, the app is free and all you do then is buy sq miles for the area you need on os explorer maps so not that expensive. It's got gps marker so you know where you are and you can log and save your route.

^^^ Wot he said ^^^

Download everytrail aswell thats free and has a tracker but the maps are poop.

I have an iPhone and have heard memory map is the one but I wanted to seperate it from my handset as I use that alot for filming e.t.c. I was hoping to get a dash mounted one.

Its more for reference to the paper maps and also to look a bit cool. Dont want to spend more than £50-60 really, just basic maps and GPS/grid position really...

I will deffo look into memory map though...

Buy a cheap old PDA off ebay with a GPS card and install memory maps... you'll be able to do that for £50.

For £100 you could have a dedicated tablet pc running memory maps with gps, etc. (this is what i've done)

Ipads are s**t cus they don't have a USB port so you can't just buy a OTS gps and plug it in.

why would yu want to?

Well if you wanted to use an Ipad as a naviagation system it will need a GPS and the easiest and cheapest way to do that is to use a USB one... which you can't with the ipad.

Equally you can't just plug a memory stick in and load up documents, movies, music, etc.

I don't understand why you would make a modern piece of computer technology without a USB port... and if you did why sooooo many idiots would buy it!

Because it stops you doing that. How are they gonna make money from their own stuff if you can easily put free stuff on it.... you'll never make it as a money grabbing bastid;):D:D

True... it makes no sense... i admit there stuff is 'sexy' and is reasonable quality... it's not brilliant... there stuff is over hyped, but, it is ok... but why would so many people buy something which runs it's own special format that nothing else will work with, which you can't easily develop your own software for and you can't easily attach other devices to it.

See you got it there.....people think its trendy.

iPad may be an option, I think you guys have all missed something here, the idea of the iPad is its wireless, thats why there is no USB, you can use a bluetooth GPS with it or one that plugs in via the headphone socket I belive. Failing that there is a USB socket adapter for it...

But anyway... its looking like memory map is the one, it seems to come up over and over so that'l be what I look at next...

Cheers for the replies tho :)

Sounds about right... you can PAY a lot of money for something which is already staggeringly over priced to have something which has been available as standard with computers for about 15 years.

Now you see im of a different thinking here, I use my iPad daily, especially with my apple TV and also my DSLR camera so for me its worth every penny, its alot more reliable than an android based tablet and the connectivity is light years ahead of other platforms...

...but anyway, this isnt an apple argument, I think in reality its looking like memory map is going onto my iPhone, I was hoping for a cheaper reference GPS but its pointless getting a seperate PDA style device just to free up my phone...

Cheers for the replies though people
