I've managed to poke a hole through the rear chassis legs.

The sale of 1/2 chassis seem rather appealing?

She has already had the rear 1/4 replaced, her MOT comes in April and with 190k i'm looking to future proof the car,

the question is..

£450 for a 1/2 chassis or £2000 for a Galv replacement.

I'd like to take her overlanding across southern Africa in the future, so her backbone is rather important.

From the rear to around 1/2 way she is a tad tired, from then on it's ok but still crusty..

New or 1/2?

Get a new one.

100% galvanized.

T wash it and paint it to ensure that the galv stays fresh and it also hides it from prying eyes who might take a fancy to your truck.

Not to mention that it also give you the opportunity to completely overhaul the suspension while you are under there.

I will just add that not having a chassis in the way while you clean off all that cruddy underseal from the underside of the body will be great and you will be able to make any repairs easier and then be able to paint, preserve and wax coat the who underside of the body much much easier.

I am planning to take a week off next summer and get a scaffolder to come and build a frame around the Rusty one so I can lift the body up off the chassis and then wheel out the rolling chassis and get it blasted and painted.

Your prices seem a tad low

I really don't trust the concept of the half chassis - lining it up properly, welding the top edge etc, so my advice would be go for the full thing.

Yes a galv chassis fitted will be well in excess of £2k and you could easily double it after you add everything together. Id do a partial rear replacement done by a trusted garage. Neither option is wrong so id go with what your budget allows. Remember the bodies go on D2s so don’t expect a galv chassis to be the end of rust issues.

There's enough access space to weld all the way round the junction of the half chassis & alignment is easy using the existing front half ( actually more like 2/3 rds) & the rear body to chassis mounts.
I agree that cost estimates for parts for both options look low. 1400mm chassis section is more likely to cost nearer £600 if buying it with all the relevant internal stiffeners etc & galv chassis's appear to be nearer £3000 and need many £100s of extras such as brake pipes & other fittings etc done at the same time.
For me it was a "no brainer" to do the 1400mm chassis section.

I have just replaced with half chassis!! Now sound for the next few years!
However! I still had issues with the rest of the other half! If you have the opportunity to check the rest (not crawling underneath on your belly!!) By 'Pit" or "Ramp"! Check the main body of the chassis! And the connections from the body mounts to the outriggers? If all ok!! Go for half chassis change! However! If you have to do more welding??? Work out the cost?? Repair?? Or replace with Galvanized??

Just so you know! My cost were ok ish for repair as in a lot cheaper than purchasing galvanized! But I will be putting some pennies aside for new full body galvanized for the next couple of years to keep her on the road

my above options are estimates, i know you usually double that

Labour isn't an issue, I lift bodies off of heavy equipment all the time, so that isn't a problem..

Prolly leaning towards a full galv myself
