I am due to take my 110SW of the road in June after a couple of years of buying lot of new shiny new parts for it IE TD5 bulk head, suspension rear disk brake conversion double cab roof truck cab rear to make it into a double cab pick up etc the only thing left to buy is a nice new galvanised chassis to mount it to but my problem is what to do cos i am getting mixed messages about replacing the chassis and some people are saying about the point scheme and losing point due to how much i wont to replace (i all ready have replaced the engine from a knackered v8 to 200tdi) so lost points there. other people are saying stamp the chassis no on the new chassis yourself other people are saying you don't need a chassis no stamped on the chassis just keep the paper work for the new chassis to prove that basically ate the end of the day i DO NOT wont it put on a q plate and keep its original identity is there any one out there that has done this that can shed i light on doing this i have looked through the forum to no avail

presumably youve already informed about change of engine ,i would inform them about roof change then do rest of work ,you dont have to stamp chassis as long as vehicle has vin no somewhere ,

thanks for the quick reply and yes the dvla have been informed about the engine change an the log book has been changed accordingly i have been told by vosa that you need a stamped vin plate and the chassis no has to be stamped on the chassis as well

in that case make a plate to fasten to chassis, numbers the same ,you can allways inform them later of any changes individually one thing to improve a vehicle over time than all in one go,i wouldnt inform teh about chassis and body in one go

hopefully i can do that but not sure i am of up to exeter vosa tomoz to speak to the guys in the workshops who actually check the vehicles and not push a pen around and will hopefully shed more light on this and not speak to a muppet from vosa on the other end of a phone who probably don't even know what a chassis is

Surely if the chassis is built to exactly the same specification as the original, then this is classed as a repair rather than an alteration?

Am I missing something? I thought the points system only mattered if you qualified for free tax status.
Seeing as this is in the defender section and "110" is mentioned. Im sure you pay tax and therefor need not worry about points, do want you want but just inform them.

i think you will find the points system also matters ref reg no of car as in how much of the original car is still there but i might be wrong i often am;)

an identical replacement chassis with paperwork to proove where it came from and that it is new not a used(with different id) one would count as an original chassis under points anyway wouldnt it ?

•chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
•suspension = 2 points
•axles = 2 points
•transmission = 2 points
•steering assembly = 2 points
•engine = 1 point

you need 8 points .....

hopefully i can do that but not sure i am of up to exeter vosa tomoz to speak to the guys in the workshops who actually check the vehicles and not push a pen around and will hopefully shed more light on this and not speak to a muppet from vosa on the other end of a phone who probably don't even know what a chassis is

Can you let us know what they tell you please?

It also affects whether you can retain your original number plate or have to get a Q plate.

thank to all the advise spoke to a nice man at vosa and he basically what you have to do is tell dvla they issue you a new chassis no then you have to get a new vin plate made and stamp the chassis when completed go to vosa then they will check the vin plate and the stamped no on the chassis but there is no number on the new chassis i hear you say next thing is he tells me is you have to stamp it on there or any decent co supplying chassis's will do that for you with evidence of the new number of course then he said just stamp your original number on there destroy the old chassis with photo evidence when scraped keep all paper work to prove a new chassis has been fitted and old one destroyed and no need to tell any one that's what most of the chassis replacement do so that said ordering my new chassis tomorrow 1600 quid lighter good job i have an understanding misses

I visit this site for help and advice and give advice if i can full stop Then you get a retarded teacher sorry spelling mistake retired teacher correcting your grammar full stop Isn't life to short full stop

i have been informed by my dad that if you buy a brand new shell for an mgb roadster and rebuild it the vehicle automaticaly has to be re registered on a q plate as its practically brand new

however loads of peeps who restore mg's have found a loophole that if you buy the new shell and store it for 5 years and have documentation to prove when you bought it and where its been stored its classed then as a replacement part and therefore can continue on its original reg

now does the same rules apply to a landrover chassis or is it a totaly different ball of wax
