Hi all
Sadly my chassis has rotted on my 2001 disco, I've had this disco 4 or 5 yrs, spent £1000s on it, can't scrap it now, what can I do? Can't seem to find used chassis any better than mine, galvanised is difficult to find and seem quite pricey, my mechanic is particularly keen to do work, im pulling my hair out disco been off Rd since Oct can't cope without it :( I'm in dorset if anyone has any suggestions please comment it's approx 1/3 of chassis including spring hanger bits (scrapping not a option) many thanks

If scrapping not an option then welding it up is all you can do.

Ring up one of the chassis manufacturers like Richards or Marslands and speak to them, they may be able to help

Other option is to get a non galv chassis, repair any damage and get it galvanised. Legality of vehicle identity may be called into question though so you will need to look into that if using a second hand chassis that already has a vin assigned to it

Is galvanising a used chassis ever a good idea?

Id been told that it would weaken the unit too much.

I had this same problem. I did lots of research before, eventually, buying a new galvanised Richards chassis. I found out that adding up all the costs of buying, transporting, galvanising and then the identity problem, it was better for me to buy a new one. I do not do work on my well-loved Disco so all work was professionally done but it was certainly well worth the money I had to spend and, if you can, and want, to afford it, I highly recommend this route.

Out of interest Derwendolly what was the final bill?

In total, chassis, carriage, work and vat, it was just under £5500 but that included lots of extra ' bits' as I told the mechanic to replace anything that need it, now or in the near future, whilst he had it in bits! I've had it from new (yr 2000) and it has always been well maintained (professionally) and it had done over 210,000 miles when I had it done. It's now approaching 240,000 miles!

For something that is a long term investment that's not OTT at all plus as you say it's a good time to get a lot of other bits and pieces sorted.
