hey there.

I have a defender 90, tdi 1991 (H reg)

I want to protect my chasis from the elements as I go greenlaning and get rather wet and muddy (not tons but a bit). Already had a bit of rot, but been cleaned up. Anyhows... I have been told I can get some grease or something for the underneath, something like hamerite but better, for enhanced protection.

Im ready to go to town on cleaning the chasis and all that jazz, but what to protect it with!

I have also seen a landy somewhere with a metal protection guard on the chasis, they any good? any need for it really for greenlaning.

Also, when you take your landy for a MOT, do they clean the underneath? ie of this protection. As when I purchased it, it was all coated up in this black stuff (maybe hamerite). But, recently, 4 months later I have been messing about with the landy and noticed its just mud now, and none of this black protection (thinking the MOT I had, might have led to them cleaning it?). Or could be due to me charging about on green lanes? and therefor is this protection just a short term thing.

Thanks Lee

Was probably Waxoyl...

The MOT man isn't allowed to remove any coverings that may be present, unless there are signs of corrosion, but even then he is limited to the prescribed tools (basically a welding hammer and pry bar).

Next time you change your oil, daub the chassis in the old stuff... far cheaper than buying waxoyl that washes off marginally slower!

old engine oil, magic! (just throwed away some last week after doing an oil change) But, my mate's car is due an oil change, I shall grab it of him!! Thanks guys!

Other option is to remove the sump breather pipe :D - mine came off on the motoway and it sprayed the entire thing in the sump oil! - This included the entire back, sides and roof of the landy! - but it ain't going to rust for a while

Why do these thing happen at night, in the winter, and when its -7 and your nowhere near any source of oil :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::violent:

I've got 5 litres of hammerite black bitumen stuff with added waxoyl to go on, but I haven't done it yet, and they've already started gritting the roads! :( It's supposed to be the best you can get. Going to give it a couple of coats of grey zinc primer first, and then whack on the hammerite stuff. Just need to clean it properly.. I don't have a steam cleaner or anything, so I've got to do it the hard way, and I think it might be a bit chilly to be getting soaked underneath a landy this weekend :(

Thought I posted this yesterday but must have clicked the wrong button

while you have a nice rust free :D truck it is worth drilling a few (say 4) holes in the bulkhead and getting some waxoil in the hollow sections like round the screen. Make sure you get some blanking plugs first and drill the holes to suit.

My 25 year old 110 has still got a perfect upper bulkhead. result.

is going to be checking the sump pipe tommorrow. Haynes says its in the oil cap (where I fill it). Really? I guess I should look. Also, this might be rather daft, but where is the gear box? I want to check the oil levels etc.

is above overkill (disco money bags) as I have checked price of karust and although its only 250ml size, it was about £8 and god knows how many I would need to cover the whole chasis. But, I do have rust and have suffered from corrison on the rear cross member, which had to have 3 X 1 inch welding done on it for the MOT. Anyhows, I did notice in Halfords they sell hammerite that can be applied directly ontop of rust. (2.5litres for £40). They also have a 5 litre hammerite waxoyl which kills rust, and prevents rust (£30). I was planning on painting it on with a brush. But, I might be able to get a compressor, if Im really lucky, but its a nature reserves so not sure. Would 2.5litres be enough? I was thinking of covering everything under the 18 year old landy, ie chasis, arches, springs, props, engine bottom, exhaust everything. Is this to much, or normal to coat everything!

Once the hammerite (rust kill and preventor) is on, I was thinking of using old engine oil and replacing it every few months as and when needed. What do you guys think? There was also some hamerite body seal with added waxole which I could use instead of the oil, but then I got to pay for it.

What do you guys think?

was working on my axel today and went to clean away the oil and some blue coating appeared, and just thought clean little more, and turned to black. So, is it likely this would have already had blue hammerite applied to it? Its a very thin smoooth layer of blue. Not explored anywhere else, which is well coated in mud.

I've done this on a few vehicles..........
connect the power wash to the hot tap and blast the underneath.
Check to ensure that there is no crap left on.
Ensure it is dry.
Warm the waxoyl (put the tin in a bucket of hot water) and mix with used oil at 1:1.
Using a cheap oil gun spray the mix everywhere.
Allow to dry (normally a day) then spary again.
You'll know when it's covered as it will drip the mix on a hot day.

You should be able to buy a gallon of waxoyl for less than £20.
Don't forget to spray the mix inside every hole you can see.

Cover youself up as it gets everywhere!
