Chaps!

Got any top tips for changing R380 gearbox and clutch on a 300tdi???
Does front exhaust section have to come off? If so how do you get the kin thing off (3 studs) with out breaking them? Heat?

As it looks like I'l be doing it on mi tod, was thinking of taking transfer box off and have made a gearbox craddle that I can put on a palet truck to lower/higher gearbox.

Ordered clutch plate, housing, bearing & fork doo dar.

What about changing spigot roller bearing in crankshaft?

Any thing else any bod would like to share?:)

Cheers in advance

Jason

remove transfer box as it really makes thing easier (it is lopsided with it on the box), did not remove downpipe on mine, you have to jack the engine up at the front to get at the top bell housing bolts, to remove spigot bearing find a suitabale round bar to fit inside fill the bearing "hole" with grease and then knock the bar with a stout hammer and the hydraulic effect of the grease will push the bearing out.

Well that's a relieve as I did'nt want to touch those minging rusty nuts on the exhaust!!!

Only thing that I've not got (ordered) is the spigot bearing!

Would it be best to get that from local LR garage????

Does anyone know if the spigot bush (bush that holds primary shaft in crankshaft) is standerd on all models?????

Paddys only list for petrol (note same ref for all vehicles)

Here-

and I want one for a 300tdi!

Hi Chaps

Got my new gearbox Tuesday night, fitted & operational by Wednesday evening "Sound as a pound" Smooth gear change, less whine/noise feels like a new car!

Thanks once again Stig for the "Top Tip" on how to get the spigot bearing out-Cool!

Re-con gearbox, new clutch Kit,spigot bearing, arm & changed the front swivel balls whilst I was waiting for my new box to come.

Not hard, long and drawn out getting all the bits off/on, used ratchet straps to get Gearbox/transfer lump off & on single handed, took a bit of time but no problem.

I can HIGHLY recommend

http://www.4x4gearboxes.co.uk

who were the only people that could collect exchange old box from France after first trying the well know ones.First class service, also advised me to change the transfer pinion (for a crossed drilled one) if need be and would only charge me if I used it.Which I did as the main shaft was well worn and she was a bit clunky before.

So the old girl should be O.K for a couple of weeks now

Nice one, not an easy job to do on your own.

No, not easy as it's a bloody big lump with the transfer box on,take your time, slowly, slowly catch monkey, I'm convinced it's better with straps on to the chassis than with a engine winch/crain because you avoid jerky movements, especially when lining the box up with the clutch plate-made a couple of 10cm studs that I screwed into the engine that made life easier.
