Hi all

Can anybody explain this one. Changing hub on drivers side as three amigos and lot of play. Whilst doing it I stopped for the evening after cracking hub nut and taking disc, carrier and caliper etc. Imagine my annoyance when I come out the next day to see its leaked on the other side (passenger) where I am not even working. Why would it have done this the now I cannot understand. That other side hub was changed about year and half ago. How can working on one side make it leak oil on other side. Also whats involved with changing seals? Many thanks as always

Could it just be that some oil from somewhere else had settled in a spot which was disturbed during your work, and managed to flow along the axle until it came off at the lower end? Seal is an O ring in a groove on the hub. Strange you had the job done not too long ago and it has waited till now to leak. Do you not normally have the side of the vehicle that leaked lower than the side that is up now, from time to time? How high have you jacked it? You said it leaked, how much?

So all the oil in the diff has gone to 1 side and found a leak,

Can’t say whats involved as don’t know where it’s actually leaking from, clean it and identify where it’s coming from.

Or just live with a little “self lube”. At least you know it still has oil:D

Its oil from the axle alright, no doubts, distinctive smell, really weird. I had to give the disc on driver side a good few smacks to get it off and there is a lot of play in that hub anyway, but how this has cause leak on other side I do not know. I painted the axle recently and defo no leaks then. Its happened the now, either strange coincidence or is it possible to cause this whilst working on other side, although I cant think how. Its is jacked just enough to have wheel off ground on side I am working on

Front, can see on these pics, weird as I haven't actually loosen the hub bolts on that side, pause so could get puller, going to have spy the night if I can. These two pic, show one side being worked on, then oil out other side, had to stick jug in to catch worst of it, lol

Looks to me like you hub seal has let go, not an O ring on the front. It may be it has been going for a while and having it on an angle has highlighted it. Someone was doing the hub seal recently on here and there were a few posts with iinformation on it.

Cheers

Annoying, guess I am as well doing the pair of them. Anybody got a part number? Will it be ok to just throw it back together the now whilst waiting on bits and reverse it out the garage with no oil in diff? I would also need it to pull my Disco 3 (immobile, needs an engine) out of the way as I have a readymix lorry coming this week, lol, Landys, love them and hate them sometimes

Hub seals are a whole new question, as there are a lot of seals that appear to be the wrong size. Again this was discussed in the previous post, see link. iirc one person sells the right size and posts on the D2BC website , is also on here but not seen that much.

My mistake recently did rear hubs, one hub sent to me was a front, had to use it anyway, had the groove for the seal, but no seal came with it. So got on to supplier, who sent seal. It then worked as a rear. So, should we assume the groove on a front hub is just decoration, or is it just to economise on machining costs, i.e. no need to change program between fronts and rears. Just checked page 9.5 in Haynes, seal there is nothing like on rears, much more traditional.

Hi, Just to confirm this -the Rear hubs have an O ring that fits into the groove on the hub and the Front hub has no seal but one inside the end of the axle.
