It looks like my tyres will be changing from 235/70R16's to 225/70R16's (long story). This will obviously effect the speedo reading (can this be changed?) by 2% - I can live with that, but will there be any other problems?

As the homologated sizes for TD5 are 235/70/16; 255/65/16 & 255/55/18 - if you go outside these sizes and have an accident or Police-related incident you could be in trouble as both you argue (quite rightly) that you compromised the security of the vehicle and other road users by fitting none-std tyres.

It's up to you of course..............................

So you can see the difference of half an inch of overall height. And how won't it change the speedo reading? The speedo works on the revolutions of the wheel - a smaller wheel will be doing less distance for each revolution - it's obvious.

Honestly that small a difference won't really effect it's driving. Police won't give a **** aslong as each axle is the same. Off-road may bring issue's I don't know about as have very little off-road experience but on road won't matter.

Not make any difference to the speedo, 225/235 refers to the width

I may have a minute effect on mpg tho, less rubber in contact with the road, means less friction

But whatever you do, they mite look a bit skinny,

cheers

Not quite right there old son.

*235/70/16 Revs/mile: 697.0

225/70/16 Revs/mile: 710.0

*255/65/16 Revs/mile: 694.0

255/70/16 Revs/mile: 671.0

*Factory Recommended sizes

Anyone who believes that the Police and Insurance Companies will not be interested in tyres sizes - especially smaller tyre sizes - is talking out of their arse.

Any modifications to std trim will be a heaven-sent opportunity for insurers to not pay out.

Any modifications to a vehicle which has been in a serious or fatal accident will be assessed by a Police accident investigator and they will almost certainly attribute blame accordingly.

In the circumstances of a serious or fatal accident you will have trouble with 'old bill', the insurers won't pay out due to Police expert witness testimony so any damages to be paid to other vehicles OR PEOPLE, will be down to you and your pocket.

Underestimate this at your peril.

You already stated 225 on there. Coming from owning cars and my wife being into slammed bmw with stretched rims as long as the wheel and tyre make a safe seal then it is fine. From what I've looked into you only need to inform you're insurance if the tyre is considered to be "pinned" or "stretched"..

Sorry, it's not even half an inch...it's 7mm.
so if u have all the answers why are u asking on ere:scratching_chin:

Wiltshire - I asked if there'd be any problems, not whether you'd like the look of them. A couple of people have answered the question I asked...which wasn't "how will they look"!
This isn't my hobby - as long as it isn't pink I don't care what it looks like.

thebiglad - your comments last night made sense to me - thanks for a useful reply. I spoke with my broker today whose response (I don't have the email to hand) was "it's not a matter for the insurer...". Of course that's not to say it doesn't need looking into further. Again, thanks for highlighting this.

If you declare this modification to your insurer - not the broker - and you get confirmation of their approval, then they have no basis to decline a claim.
