Having sold my Disco 1:mad: replacing with Disco 2:)
I have to remove private number plates which are stuck on and have been for the last 9 years.
To break the adhesive could I spray wd40 down behind to soften adhesive without damaging paintwork. Suggestions when I did a search included a battle axe and a 3ft crowbar, usual on this forum.

cheers

you could, I ended up using a bread knife!!!! An aternative is to use fishing line to cut through the adhesive pads. Once you are able to get an end up (oh er) you can get a knife in behind. Once off a heat gun used carefully will soften the adhesive remaining from the pads so they can be peeled off...............

have to come off, as I said before they are a private plate which my wife bought me as a present.
In the interest of marital bliss they have to be swopped onto the new car

thanks for the tips

Go to the nearest arms depot. Beg, borrow or steal a thermonuclear device. Hide in the north sea. Aim said device at your car. Stand back. Press launch. Voila, plate will be removed from car. As an added bonus what's left of your car will be nice and warm on these cold mornings.

Or you could use some nlyon packing tape (the stuff that's about 10mm wide and used to hold big parcels together) does much the same job as copper wire or fishing line but doesn't cut into your hands. WD40 is great for removing adhesive that it can get to but it won't be able to get to much of the pads. Use it after you've got the plate off to remove the remains.

Stick the new ones on top of the old.

Worked for me when I failed an MOT with a cracked plate (and didn't want to pull half the back off the Citroen by removing the plate).

Back in the 60/70's my uncle used to buy and sell Series 2 landies, he kept one good one that went to the mot testing station several times a year  Sadly he passed away around 20 years ago, not sure how he would have got around the system we now have but I'm sure he would've worked out something :)
