Looking at the overhaul manual for the LT230Q the only obvious thing of difference I can see between a D1/Defender Front output housing and the CDL equipped one on a D2 is the lack of a drilled and tapped hole for the Hi/Lo sensor .

Can I retrofit one of these (and internals) to a non CDL D2 box, drill and tap the hole, and all will work?

It'd be a lot cheaper than buying the Ashcrofts CDL upgrade kit or sourcing a new D2 CDL box.

Am I missing something obvious?

Not as much as that, they go for £150 or so normally, but you can always pay more if you want to.

Picked up my spare R380 and LT230 for £220 a couple of years back, you just need to keep an eye on ebay and Pre-Loved.

LT230 is a simple beast, download the service manual off Ashcroft site and pull it apart for a tinker :)

Maybe just fit d1 box? Don't know if that's an option???

you can fit front output housing with both hi/low switch and diff lock mechanism but you will need to set up diff preload as shim for such fits behind diff bearing race in housing or fit housing or earlier box with cdl and no hi/lo switch and either noit worry about that or make up a switch for in the cab

Got a broken one in bits in the shed. The ratio on the D1 is different which is why I was thinking of transplanting a front housing only.

Anyhow, I've got a full working box with CDL on the vehicle, but it has some backlash. I've got a master rebuild kit coming from Ashcrofts but was thinking I might pick up a box I can refurb at leisure rather than have the car off the road while I do the one that's on it.

Aye cheers, not having much luck locating D2 front housings/donor boxes for anything like reasonable money. If anyone's got a clunker they don't need.... :D

You must be a lot luckier than me lol

Land Rover Discovery 2 Transmission Transfer Box / Case - ICG500011 | eBay
Check it has the CDL, not clear from the pictures

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY TD5 TRANSFER BOX WITH DIFF LOCK | eBay
Has got diff lock

Landrover Discovery TD5 Transfer Box. Disco gearbox/transmission | eBay
Check it has diff lock, says 2002 so should have.

Landrover Discovery 2 Td5/V8 Transfer box | eBay
Check it has diff lock, not clear from picture.

Like I said, keep an eye on ebay and Pre-Loved, it isn't luck, just persistence.

Cheers for the links Peter. Think I'll just have to refurb the box that's on unless one comes up really cheaply.

Have HD cross pin, sleeved case, and high capacity sump to go on :D

My spare box is built up now, but keep your eyes open, they do come up even cheaper than those links, especially when they have a bearing gone or something like that.
