Have just been donated a CD multichanger for my '55 Td4, (pretend) electrician reckons he can't find anyway of connecting it. Anybody got any suggestions

Ye could always try a cable with what kinda looks like din plugs on the ends tae the back of the radio/tape/cd player. BTW Welcome;) :D
 
Its a Philips, model number 22RC026. It does have a lead supplied with an 8 pin connector.

These were for the early freelanders 1997 - 2000 and connected to the head units that were tan in colour.

I think you may need an alpine unit with an XQE or PMA prefix.
