hi all just wondering if a 91 exhaust system with out the cats would fit on my 95 v8, my cats are gone and just been informed im looking at £400 ish, cheers Andy

If its a petrol which iam guessing it is being a v8 it won't pass mot! If it's a derv should be ok, depends on the tester, as they only have smoke test

If its after 1990 and came from the factory with a cat, new regs state it must have one, according to my mot man

Pray tell then! As I run my trackcar decat but it's road legal if ican get away without putting the cat back on I'd love to

Passenger vehicles (a disco is in that class although it has 7 seats) and first used on or after 1 September 2002 now have the Full Cat Test, others have to pass the emissions test with or without a cat... very doubtfull I think that a standard 'catted' disco V8 would pass without it's cats.

I said it wouldnt pass an mot, So are you saying that any passenger vehicle made before 2002 don't have to have a cat?

Correct! download the manual then if you have a problem just point to the page on Non Cat and BET testing that where al the info is I didn't make it up. :)

But there is a little bit on kit cars that don't have any manufacturers emmissions spec, u might wish to look at that doesn't apply to a disco i wasn't interest.

I'll do that this evening then, mot man is a family friend and he says I cant have my 1994 pug306 decatted as its a straight fail if it's not there

Basic Emissions Test (BET) Vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1992 not a ful cat test according to the manual.

I must admit that I thought petrol cars all had to have a cat after about 1992 ish as it was part of their closed loop fuel injection system. The cat had to be in place and operational to pass an mot.

Diesel cars are completely different as they only had to pass a 'smoke' test. This applied to cars produced up to about 2003 I believe, after that date, the cat had to be seen to be in place.

Under the latest regs, which I think apply to all cars irrespective of age, have to have any factory fitted anti-pollution equipment such as cats and EGR Valves, in place don't they?

I suppose the question that's going through my mind is what is a Full Cat Test and a BET

All petrol vehicles first used after 1st aug 1992 will need a cat, its not a case of the cat is self must be there but inorder to get the emissions down low enough you will need to use a cat. If you could get emissions below the thresehold without a cat then there would be no reason to fail it but there is no way to get the emissions down that low im afriad so a cat is going to be needed...

My 300 Tdi passed recently without EGR, Cat or centre silencer box .. it had better emissions than when all the gubbins was in place .. and that was running on some serious ****e, waste engine oil, veg oil and diesel, with only a gallon or so in the tank so picking up all the accumulated crud!

I asked him about the cat, he said no, not needed on a diesel, still only the smoke/emissions thing ... ;)

Correct! 'unless' they can pass without a cat, so nothing has changed for these vehicles in the 2012 MOT regs. but 2002 vehicles have to have a cat fitted for the MOT test even though the may have passed without it.
That's the difference
