Up **** creek.
Hi my V8s done about 130K now and as they are prone to worn camshafts i was wondering is it worth putting castrol magnatec in it as apparently it clings all the time or just keep using my unipart 10W/40 or has anyone got any other suggestions? (at 1st i was told to put thin oil in so it gets there quicker but when asked what milage it had done was told to go for the thicker 1)

You can use Magnatec but is expensive, 10W/40 Part Synthetic oil is ok for the V8 if you find that you are using oil and have to top up then go up a grade 15W/40.
At the moment i'm using 5W/40 but have to top up with a litre over the 6,000 miles (didn't use anything when I was using mineral oil) so I will be changing to 10W/40 Part Synthetic oil in the spring.

Cheers buddy, i actually have a really small oil leak (where the engine joins the gearbox) which requires top ups periodically, do you think by adding a thicker oil it will leak less? stands to reason. (is that what you mean by using oil?)

Use good quality oil and change it at regular intervals. I had a V8 range rover and changed it every 5k. A lot of the V8 wear issues is due to poor servicing.

I don't have any leaks as such so I must be burning the missing litre of oil.
When I started using 5W/40 the stuff leaked from the rocker and sump gaskets but a nip-up of the bolts and screws stoped all that.
So i would say that a thicker oil will reduce the amount of oil leaking out I doubt if it will stop it. In the past on other cars I have found that where there's a leak tighting the bolts, using a torque wrench, in that area has stoped it.

cheers pete, tell me (or anyone else) so what make/grade oil do you think 1 should go for? as i have a slight leak and regulary top up my oil is always quite clean (i see it as my permenant oil change!) but i will be giving her a complete oil/filter change when it gets warmer. cheers

we had that guy (or one like him) on here a year or two back - if yu search for "snake oil" yu will find him - they even sent me a sample for the Dibnah - made no difference at all - used a gallon of oil on a trip to Salisbury and back .

Ooops!

That "chap" is the one who collected my Landy for the advert work. I was pretty impressed with how well the old tranny ran.

Think my oil loss has been sorted by Kris when he did my crankshaft rear oil seal. Hope so as she was a little smokey on my last trip to the plains too. Ive not seen any smoke pluming out from underneath recently. I'm gonna check the oil level tonight as I've been using the Landy to get to work this week and last week and have done around 300 miles since I've had her back.

id like to know wot oils in mine... ive done 4k since iv had it and the oil is as clean as new oil

Synthetic my dear nath, my synth oil stays a light brown/golden colour through to the 6k oil change unlike mineral oil I used in the past which was black, although it may be different with a diesel engine.
Will see if it's the same with semi-synth when I use that later on.

hi mrnice,
As Soloby Rob post above somewhere 10w40.
Halfords have a sale at the moment on their own label semi-synth oil.. which is produced by Mobil, I believe.
