Managed to get the afternoon off today and seeing as it was nice weather i thought that i'd lift the carpets up and dry em out!

Having read on here a few times about the carpet underlay soaking up water like a sponge i thought i'd cut it out and bin it!!!

Didn't realise how thick the underlay was until i lifted the front carpets and it was soaking wet! Managed to remove all of it from the front footwells and have left the carpets up to dry out.

Checked the floor pan both sides and there is no rust damage and it looks very clean!

Glad i did it as i hate to think how long its been wet for!

Worth doing!!!

You need to find out where the water is getting in, screen is favourite, sunroofs, roof bar mounting bolts, bulkhead grommets, ive had all these on my discos!
**** weather will be here very soon.

check out the heater unit behind the passenger footwell - mine went and ****ed water all over the place in my v8 - eventually by passed it altogether rather than replace it!

IMHO mate chasing leaks in a disco is sometimes more trouble than it's worth - once that underlay is out then you arent gonna end up with much more trouble...

Wellies is better than welder at least :D

Discos tend to leak from alpine lights, windscreen seal or heater box.

Won't be hard to find if you dry the car out and take through a car wash etc...

Cheers

I've got tomorrow off so will be continuing with the underlay removal!
Will remove it from the back seat area and from under the boot carpet - should be interesting!!! How bad can the floor be on a 1997 disco??? :)

Might even try and do some pics :)

Have just stripped out all of the underlay in the back of the disco, even under the boot carpet. Was very surprised with the condition of the boot floor! There are a couple of bits of very slight surface rust but the floor is solid with no rust on any of the spot welds!
If i can get the pics off my iphone i'll post em later :)

You is one lucky bunny...

'specially as you noticed a problem and decided to do something about it...good lad :D

Yep thanks mate!
Was a bit worried about what state the floor would be in after hearing lots of horror stories on here! But i am really pleased that everything is in such good condition, checked the wheel arches too and they are faultless!

Must be because its a jap import (2005) :)

Had a good look underneath this afternoon and the chassis, sills and bodywork is all in very good condition.
The only thing i can see might need sorting are the rear brakelines as they are quite corroded. So i'll get some copper tube and make some new ones.

Cheers

Hi Discovery1-Daz
after i dried out my rear carpet, same as yours, very little rust, but soaking through, what i did was seal completely the inspection cover to the fuel tank and cover it in a complete thick newspaper. This i inspect and remove every 4-6 weeks. My thoughts are that the cover invites condensation which soaks through the foam underlay. Since i started this my rear floor has been permanently dry.Keep up the good work.

Looks like you're onto a winner there daz.

As above, make sure it's been undersealed though, these bad winters will play havoc with a non-sealed underbody.

Copper brake pipes are always a good shout. If copper wasn't so expensive manufacturers would fit them from new.

Cheers

Hi Jim thanks for the tip mate! I'll do that asap.
I will need to get some ku-rust to sort out the little bits of surface rust.

I'll check underneath so its all sealed and get the brake pipes changed asap too!

Am looking to put some rear spots on too - i'll be busy again this week!!

Cheers

Here are the pics (i hope!)
