Carb rebuild didn’t fix it

Help please,

my 86 petrol 90 is struggling to run. I can get it to run but only just. Slightest touch of the accelerator and it dies. I’ve rebuilt the 32/34 dmtl carb but it will only just idle. The plugs turn black but dry. The mixture screw is only one full turn from closed.
The fuel gauge works intermittently, could it be an earth problem? The gearbox is earthed to the battery directly.

Any helpful ideas please?

Definitely the correct jets. No better with the air filter off.
Could it be a weak spark? How long do the HT leads usually last? It’s two years but less than 100 miles since I replaced the coil, HT leads, distributor cap, rotor and points. It ran very well until I replaced the centre exhaust box and let it sit a few months. Now it is terrible.

It's easy to check the spark, pull a lead, put a plug in the end and put the plug on the engine somewhere to earth it. Turn the engine over and you'll see the colour of the spark

Thanks everyone!!!
All sorted eventually, for now….
I replaced the old braided fuel pips which was leaking first. No change.
I went through the plugs and distributor and noticed a faulty HT lead from the coil. Replacing that got her running again but at a very fast idle.
Had the carb on and off several times. The float height and jets were all right but the two springs on the throttle spindle weren’t good enough to fully close the throat when lifting off the accelerator. I’ve tried to source replacements but without luck. Instead I have shortened the springs by about 2cm each. Te throttle snaps closed again now and she’s running well!
Just a lone driveshaft nut to replace now before MOT. We did the rear transfer box oil seal last week and one of the nuts that came off isn’t round! It looks very stretched somehow.
Cheers!

I tried Classic Carbs…. The inner spring is on back order and ‘may’ be available eventually. The outer one that connects to the second spindle mechanism is not available.
With care and the right former you can cut the hook off each and bend in a new one. No heat! They work a treat for now but who knows how soon they’ll stretch again??
Thanks for the recommendation though!

You might benefit from electronic ignition. The quality of caps, condensers, and HT leads is pretty random now.
Lumenition is probably the best, but quite expensive. Accuspark works for us, and a complete distributor, coil, plugs, and leads is a bit over 100 quid.
