i've bought a series 2 for parts, as it stands i've got no id or vin plates , it has had new dumb irons in the past and a replacement bulkhead . the windscreen is a single screen not split, the bulkhead is off a 2 not defender etc . the glass in it states " conforms to BS 857-2 1967 obviously means bo diddley to me, would it be possible to find out the reg from the engine and transmission numbers etc anyone got any ideas are there any other numbers that i could possibly date the vehicle from ????

Can't get reg number from engine. To get a reg dvla will need to inspect it before issuing a new regnumber sounds like the original plates could well be hanging off a tax exempt defender

Get in touch with seller tel him plod think it's nicked. If he doesn't give ya the reg number yu're gonna give em his name and address: D. Failing that vic check it is.

right theres a few things i can help you with here as ive got the same **** going on with mine and its a bloody nightmare in my case as the dvla nor vosa arent tellin me jack all about it

the other numbers i can tell you about and how to find them are identity numbers

1 chassis number was also stamped on the passengers side chassis rail behind the engine mount on the engine side of that rail bout 10" back from the mount

the engine number should be on an oval shaped flat part of the engine block just forward of the exhaust manifold on the same side

the gearbox number should be on top of the gearbox at the back end of it clearley visible from the centre inspection pannel in the seatbox

other rare places for the chassis number include

top of the passengers chassis rail rear approx 16" from the rear crossmember (can only be found with the rear tub removed)

drivers side chassis rail inner next to the transfer box just above the centre crossmember

there have also been instances of it being stamped in the front crossmember hole top just next to the steering relay spindle ( verry rare place to be stamped )

mine was bought without id or v5 as a series 3 but vosa have confirmed mine is a series 2 chassis with a series 3 body sat on it so its a major can of worms i have opened and a massive investigation too ive now got a restored series 2/3 with no id and an official order not to move it from my premises

i hope yours goes far better than mine is and the verry best of luck to you mate
