I have a guy popping down tomorrow to reset the ECU

Code reading and resetting ECU is only a small part of any diagnosis

Live date monitoring over a period of driving, stationary and doors open closed etc with component testing is the only way to begin to A, understand how a system operates and B, how to mend it.

Don't let your man simply read code, clear code and tell you that you need an XYZ because it may be an effect of a component failure but not the cause

something about compressor overheat

along with the pressure static when rising fault

When on its own The overheat would have been stored as a pending error ( this can easily be proven whilst live data monitoring)

When the Static error kicked in (fatal error) this would then have put the system into fail and dash message

I could not get system to display dash message purely by overheating the compressor

oh right...

so what happens when the compressor overheats ?

does it shut off for a cool off period or something

Yes exactly - compressor temp rises to 100 Deg C and then live data shows overheat (but no dash message)

Pump shuts off - temp drops to 80 Deg C (if i remember correctly) and then kicks in again till 100 then cuts out and so on

I only found this out after using live data

well found out ! :)

i have a feeling by the end of all this your going to be our new L322 EAS guru :D:D:D

lol the main thing is is that I am a tight Black Country bloke who doesn't mind spending but I have to spend on the correct item first and not blatantly believe an error code just because the computer tells me that code and its relevant part that "needs" replacing

I use my diagnostic machine as a tool and not as a bible

I do like live data though

All fault codes are only a guide, the actual fault as you have found may be something indirectly causing the error.

Working for myself Diagnostics has become a major part of the repairs I carry out

I always aim to diagnose the fault 3 times and spend only once

Reading many forum threads on any car problems it is clear that some diagnose once and then keep throwing money at the problem until they "just happen" to stumble across the actual fault

If I can offer one piece of advise to anyone preparing to have their vehicle problem diagnosed by a "Diagnostics Expert" I would ensure you ask if they will be simply going to read the fault codes stored (usually £20) or are they going to Code read, Component test, Live data monitor, etc etc BEFORE offering you a repair cost !

Ouch, that's expensive.......but a good investment if you're working on cars regularly.

Will wait to see if the ECU reset today brings the luxury ride back.

If it does then I'll buy myself a lower cost diagnostic tool and periodically reset the ECU....in time I'll use this board and tinker with the car to diagnose exactly what is causing the drop from luxury to harsh.....

OK here's where I would start

Key out

Doors can be closed or open it doesn't make a difference for this test

Disconnect push fit air connector in boot to compressor at the T piece

You should ONLY get a small burst of air which should almost instantly stop

If you get ANY amount of continual air from the car side of the pipe work then you gonna need the solenoid block (see my static, drops thread)

Also if block is worn you may also get the car ride height drop as well

TEST COMPLETE

Reconnect compressor and start vehicle - this may now induce a dash error so be prepared to have to cancel if needed with a computer etc

Having read your description my initial "over the net" diagnosis is the £400 + fitting solenoid valve block !

Let me know what you find after disconnecting air though

BBS Faultmate is the best bet for the L322 covers all systems and gives live data etc.:)

+1

i have found though that the system is quite buggy - with quite alot of faults within the software. and im a little bit disappointed in the lack of knowledge from BBS. considering they design the system for the L322, they seem to know very little on how the L322 works.

:(

What sort of bugs? Not heard of any before:confused:

Yep. The diagnostics guy turned up. Explained to him how the car seems to go from luxury to harsh after a few days of getting it back from the garage. He wasn't convinced. He took one look at my tyres and said that's your problem. I explained I'm happy with the ride some of the time dispite the tyres. He insisted he'd seen it countless times - customers putting low profile tyres on the car and wondering why the ride suffers.

Anyway, he re-calibrated the heights. Thought it was sitting high at the front. He also reset the ECU. No improvement was immediate. But now I'm convinced it's driving better. Dear me, I think I'm losing it!!!! ;-)

He said the ECU was clear - no warnings.

Will give the car a good drive tomorrow to see how it feels. I'm also considering going from one extreme to the other. Replacing my 22" wheels for 18" for winter......and to experience the ride.

I'm still convinced the handling suffers after a few days. Will the FAULTMATE MSV-2 Extreme allow me to reset the ECU and re-cal the heights?
