can someone explain , for the non mechanically minded?

OK so the 90 goes into the garage ( new garage ) for a small service , i.e diff oil/transfer box oil/gear oil change and also to have the bearings checked for wear n tear etc. The mechanic then rang to tell me that the swivel housing and bearing have gone on the n/f , i had the bearing and a uj done on that same wheel in march ( at another garage ) so why after only a few months has the bearing gone , i've done the peaks bakewell run , the ox droves and 2 small trips round Devon , surely thats not enough to trash the bearing again , especially as i've hardly done anything major on those trips?

Did the new bits come in a blue box:confused::confused:
Far from an eggspurt, but that would explain it:rolleyes:

I haven't a clue , i just left the 90 there and the guy fixed it , this new chap has told me he only uses OEM parts , and tBH he's checked the others and they are fine , altho the seal from the swivel or bearing or summit has gone on the right side as well , but thats just the seal , not the whole housing..
You're in the lap of the Gods if you're a bird trying to get anything fixed without being fobbed off.:(

"Swivel housing and bearing"

depending on what was meant by that, it may be fine. It could mean the pins and the bearing thats in the swivel housing, then again if he did mean the wheel bearings I'd question the previous garage. If they used britpart, its still not really an excuse to stand behind

Just had the same problem with mine! Shonky work from previous garage ie: not done at all ended up needing new hub and stub axle and nearly a new gear box due to no oil all of which I was charged for on my service and only been laning three times since the service!
Oh and the track rod ends which were allegedly done also hadn't been in total I have paid for the same job 2 and a half times!

if the previous garage didnt do a decent job with the bearings even OEM ones could be shagged now if the seal wasn't seated and some muddy crap got in there, dont forget you did do some serious mileage getting to and from the bakewell run, if that was done with muddy water in the grease it would soon wear away at the bearings, mine get changed every three months because im lazy and dont check after every weekend playing, i figure if im gonna have to strip em to clean em every week i may as well save the weekly time and effort and just rep[lace em once every three months or so.

How wet was the bakewell run, did you spend any time sat in hub depth water?

I think it all comes back to the previous place not doing a bang on job and the lack of maintenance after each and every outing playing.

I do have a little insight into the problems with getting a decent service though, being a foreigner here is pretty similar i reckon, they just see me as a simple cash cow and try to overcharge for the simplest jobs and quite often dont even do the jobs i ask em to, hence now doing it all myself.

If they replace parts for you always ask for the old ones back if in doubt, to make sure they done what they say they did. It is the law here

The Bakewell run was pretty dry , I avoided the muddy bits lol , the ox droves were wet in places but no prolonged water or sitting around in depth. I'm just foxed as to why that front left has gone when all the others are ok , it just seems a bit suspect when it's the same bit twice.

Something else to think about, do you know which bearing it was he did?

It could have been a wheel bearing but now your swivel pin bearing has failed or vice versa, do you know what the first mechanic did and what the second mechanic is telling you you need?

Swivel housing gone? That could only be the swivel pin and/or the bottom swivel bearing.

Did he say that it was a stub axle bearing and if so, which one, the inner or the outer?

If one of the stub axle bearings had gone, how did he know which one, and did he change both of them?

I don't know about your 90, but as far as I know there isn't a UJ at any of the wheels ... only on each end of the prop shafts! You will have a CV coupling inside the stub axle swivel ball.

Please refer your new mechanic this way, as he appears to be possibly extracting the urine slightly!

The former garage did the Wheel bearing , the second mech has said the swivel housing is knackered , mr Muds just came home via the new garage and Betsy is still up on the ramp , it's the whole casing that the big ball bit sits in is crumbled on the deck and new parts , bearings top and bottom (I think he said ) have been fitted just caught it in time apparently , should be done by tomorrow , so even tho we'll be several £100s lighter , I guess it's the price you pay for not being a mechanic  (and having a hobby like laning tsk!:))

youd needed to see the parts so see if oil /grease was contaminated with water or dirt easy enough to tell wear through poor parts or old parts (ie expectable or contamination .both water or dirt can take a new set of bearings etc out within a short space of time

On initial examination the mech did find that the swivel casing had been contaminated by water , I don't know if that contamination arose from the bearing change by the other garage , and I guess there's no way of knowing . I feel happy that this new garage know their onions as the guy has over 30 years experience man and boy , there seems to be re-builds going on , even galv chassis building , so I feel a bit happier about this place rather than the everyday town garage - don't get me wrong , I'm not slating the other place or the work they did , I'm just trying to understand how something like this could happen when the wheel bearing was changed only a few months ago .

Thor -yes I have a 4into1 breather kit fitted with the snorkel -which was fitted by a friend ( also a Landy man through and through) so yes diff breathers front and rear.

breathers wont keep water or mud out ,may help ,but checking after is best
