Hi,

I've attached a photo of a truck.

My Directors neighbour is selling it for £1,200 and I'm informed it's in an OK condition although he's had to replace the fuel pump.

I would like to think I could buy it for c£1k maybe?

It's coming with 12 months MOT.

The only questions I have are:

  • As it's a 1984 B Reg is it a Defender or Series?
  • It's a petrol engine - will this be man enough to pull a horse trailer?
  • What are the key areas to look at for rust etc. Chassis? Bulkhead, Cross Member?
  • Any other advice which would be apprecaited.
Thanks.

It's a 90 not a defender at that age

Petrol should be reet, they're gutsy enough can always upgrade with a new carb if you need to

Rust, check all chassis with a hammer, bulkhead, footwells, basically anywhere and everywhere

Check for any dents in the chassis too just incase they've decided to take it off road or use a chassis leg as a jacking point

Make sure it's not overheating etc, plenty of threads in here just have a search

  • As it's a 1984 B Reg is it a Defender or Series? Neither - it's a 90.
  • It's a petrol engine - will this be man enough to pull a horse trailer? Single, yes. Double, maybe not.
  • What are the key areas to look at for rust etc. Chassis? Bulkhead, Cross Member? Yes.

Thanks.

It's a 90. Not a series. they weren't called Defender until 1990.

3.5 2.25 or 2.5? if the V8 it'll pull it but you'll only get 14mpg ish. if either of the other 2 it'll pull the trailer but very slowly. I'd suggest a 200TDi upgrade or an LPG conversion if it's the V8

All those. and more. Do a search on here. Lots of info to be found.

1000 would be quite good, yes it would pull a horse trailer but dont expect double figures that rapidly, its a 90 not a series and check the chassis with a hammer and screwdriver, rear crossmember, bulkhead around the vents on the corners and footwells, bodywork looks in good condition which is a sign its been looked after but not a certanty

it will pull a horse trailer.... with a horse in you dont want rapid acceleration or high speeds... twill drink fuel though..... you could be looking at 20 mpg solo with the 4 cylinder engines or half that towing a couple of horses
