Right, i'm an iditot, assume i know nothing, its much easier that way, no one is dissapointed , just plesantly suprised and the ability to rub my belly whilst pstting my head at the same time.....

I'm gonna buy a truck, or some disciption, some bastard put the idea of a landy in my head, i havent slept for two nights thinking about it.
I live in sweden, work with trees, mainly in urban areas but on occasion in the middle of the ass hole of nowhere. Will need to carry tools and kit, tow reasonable loads upto (couple of tonne) mybe drag over the odd tree, be abused, camping trips, thrashing through hills etc.
I have been looking at ex MOD Defender 90 late 1980's 2,5D good colour and dents will only add to the value of the vehicle. My sister and her fella have just offered me there Freelander td4 3 door. Much shal we say classier looking, would feel bad if i rammed it in a ditch, but much better road charateristcs...coz i will be doing regular long hauls in it across scandinavia - i have driven defenders before the first 10 minutes is hell and all you do is complain, after 30 minutes your body goes numb and you complain but it doesnt matter coz after oly 20minutes you've gone deff - (i am right in this, and its not just me is it? ). Both looking at 3.5k....
think the freelander is an 03 but i'm gettg more specs soon.......

what would you do???

defender every time!!! the freelander may be more comfortable but you will sacrifice ability! i would consider a discovery or a rangerover classic too all are better for the job you want them to do than the freelander!

i'm defffinatley thinkig defender despite it being 20 years old, has any one experience with ex MOD Landy - by truck is a term for anything bigger than a car and smaller than a 18 wheeler. EVry bad point i come across the defender is out weighed by the fact that it is a defender, available in a full range of colours as long as the one you want is olive green, But i'm a lanky bastard, and the idea of 10 -16 hours straight on the roads in a defender dosent appeal as a cruise over into denmark and norway and such.....THats the only thing that has got me thinking about the freelander i've been offered, its gonna be much better on the roads, and to behonest my work is gonna be 90% road and tracks, but then there is the whole of scandinavia to smash around on the weekend. Fuel is a it of an issue as well but i reckon to be clockig up some 2 - 3000km a month....its gonna add up, but i have already spied a big ass winch for a defender....
also from my understanding, defenders are much more easier to work on....is this the case?...oh yeah freelanders are warmer...(wimp i know but you try sitting out in -30C.....after spending a whole week out in the forests your glad for a little comfort for the next 14 hours of boring, straight, dull roads....) oh dilema!!!

as i said a disco will do 99% of the things a defender will..... and they are comfortable..... with the back seats down the interior space is bigger than a 110........

they are pretty easy to work on too as they are mechanically almost identical to a defender (same layout)

can i pick up a half decent disco for less than 4 k? also i must note i have noticed the MOD flog of LHD landys, perfect for me coz i spend 90% of time in europe....

awesome cheers!! i shall have a look and continue my research.... as if i go ahead this will be my first landy purchase...i'd hate for it to be ****!

would i have to alter anything on the old defender for it to work in the brassmonkey freezing temperatures experienced out here?

as storm says a good battery, i would go for an optima red top, they are not cheap but they are worth the money!

also some sound deadening insulation from someone like Soundproofing Products for Car Soundproofing | Industrial Soundproofing | Marine Soundproofing it will keep the noise down and keep it a bit warmer inside

oh and i would get a supplementary heater or get the cold weather kit that the MOD use

oh and a volcano kettle for when you stop and need a quick brew

From reading what you've written, I can tell you that a Freelander really isn't what you're looking for, even though it may be tempting after taking comfort + mod cons into account.

In my opinion you'd be better off going half way and getting a Disco. You get almost the capability of a Defender + similar comfort to that of a Freelander.
