Hi Everyone,

I moved to Australia back in December, only temporary really on a working holiday visa so I might be here for a year or two. Possibly longer if I like it and emigrate but that is too far away to think about!

So I went up the east coast from Sydney to Cairns.. from Sydney to Brisbane with my cousin in a hire camper van, then from Brisbane to Cairns with some other english guys I met who had bought a camper van and had a spare seat, as my cousin had to go back to work (he works in Alice Springs).

I then flew across to Darwin, then down to Melbourne. Im now working in the mountains near Moe which is a couple of hours east of Melbourne. Doing seed collection work, so I climb up mountain & alpine ash trees, which can be 150-230ft tall. I then cut off a selection of branches and people on the ground collect the seeds, which are then taken away and spread by helecopter and planes over areas which have been destroyed by bush fires or logging.

Anyway, onto topic, I want to get a vehicle out here. Really want to get a 4x4.

Problem is there isn't a lot in the way of Land Rovers over here, not cheap anyway. Assuming a budget of around $6k (which is more than I would really like to spend), there isn't a single Defender, which would be my 1st choice. Don't really fancy getting another Disco, so its between a RR Classic and Im spoilt for choice for slitties!

I would quite like a Rangie, but they all seem pretty high mileage...like 300k km and up... quite a lot for a Rover 'V8 isnt it?

And then there are loads of Nissan Patrols, Toyota Land cruiser, Hilux etc.

So can I do it? Will I be forgiven If I go slitty? OR should I persevere and try and find a good Rangie?

Cheers! :D :)

go with what you can afford and what you will be able to get spares for easily,a defender would be good but is it the right choice for you and where you are, there is another aussie on here from cairns,he has not been on for awhile though.;);)

old land cruisers are bloody brilliant, i hate to say it but they really are.

if you cant get a rangey then an old land cruiser will serve you well, they are bloody fantastic

and bits are not cheap compared to lr

they are in other parts of the world, out in oz land rovers arent as common as they used to be, since slittys came about the land rovers were shunted out hugely so parts out there are dead simple to come across from my understanding

yeh i think ive just gota keep checking ebay and trading post and see what comes up. my heart is saying rangie but my head is saying slitty!

il let u guys know what i end up getting!

of course the other option would be to ship my 110 over from home... but i dont know how much paperwork that would involve or how much it would cost. any ideas? i probably wouldnt do it though unless i decided to settle down here for at least a couple of years. because really im travelling, so whilst iv managed to get myself a fairly flexible and good job, i will probably jet off to places like thailand and new zealand for a month or so at a time, whilst based here.
