Hey all

I'm having issues with a leaky rear inner hub seal on my 1986 Defender 90. However, the vehicle was heavily modded before I bought it and I'm struggling to work out which axle I have, and hence which parts to order. I need to buy new stub axles, seals, gaskets, bearings and so on.

The engine in my 1986 Defender 90 is a 200tdi from a Discovery 1. The front axle is a 24 spline axle which I *think* is from a Discovery 1 with ABS (VIN from JA032850). I logically thought that my rear axle would be from the same donor Discovery but nothing adds up parts-wise.

Here's what I know about the rear axle:
  • The half-shafts are 10 spline.
  • The axle has disc brakes (I believe the original axle would have had drum brakes).
  • The stub axle appears to have the number HRO 1150 23233Z5 JG5B A 11 stamped on the back (at least, I think that's what it is, it's hard to read). Is this a parts number? I can't find anything when Googling it.
  • The stub axle has a notch through the thread, rather than a larger flat side like this one https://bearmach.com/media/catalog/...1322a5be86698c6cf881637727/F/T/FTC3183_10.JPG - pretty much every rear stub axle I can find online has this larger flat tabbed area rather than the notch, which I can only find on *front* stub axles.
  • The diff pan is round and welded on, so it's not a salisbury axle.
I've scoured the web and the stub axle from my rear axle looks exactly like this which is a *front stub axle* for a Defender of my year: https://www.paddockspares.com/frc4320-stub-axle-front-axle-to-ka930455.html - could it be that the previous owner used the front stub axle from the old original front axle on this rear axle? Is that even possible??

If anyone can help me unravel this mystery I'd very much appreciate it. The poor landy is off the road until I can figure out what parts I need to order :)

Cheers

Marcus

Pictures maybe?

Early Disco 1 and RR use a 10 spline diff. Have a look at the flange and see if it matches up. Ashcroft transmissions has some handy info for id’ing parts.

Good idea, thanks :) I'll grab some photos of the flange and stub axle tomorrow in daylight.

I did think it was an early Disco 1 axle, since that would match up with the engine. But the stub axle has thrown me, because it's the notched type which only seems to be found on front axles.

no notched was on rear too ,early axles all had notched stubs later d type try ftc950
not that it matters as as long as stubs are the same length as early are long later shorter, either can be used with the correct washer and tab washer

Thanks for the replies, really helpful.

Here are a bunch of photos of the axle and stub axle:

It's a thick flange, 10 spline, fixed half-shaft.

@jamesmartin - I notice that the ftc950 has an additional notch / circular cutout in the base. Mine does not. Does this matter? Also I notice that ftc950 stub axles are about £120 each whereas other types range from £15-£25 each. As long as I get one the correct length would I be fine with a cheaper variant?

notch is for abs sensor but stub fits and is used on non abs too
theres also stub axle 593681 which is early rrc

Sorry, I'm still struggling with this.

The diff-side of the FTC950 stub axle (pic here: https://www.shop4autoparts.net/parts/axle-suspension/ftc950-stub-axle-oem/) has an additional spigot that my stub axle doesn't have. This is a photo of the diff-side of my stub axle: https://ibb.co/j8SGiV

Does anyone recognise these?

EDIT: I guess my issue is that I need to replace stub axle, seals, gaskets, bearings and so on - in order to do that I need to work out not just which stub axle I have but which axle I have. I previously believed the axle to be early Disco 1 (before JA032850) in which case Paddock spares recommend the FRC8005 stub axle - this has an additional spigot. Does it matter? Would the FRC8005 work?

Thanks @jamesmartin I really appreciate the response.

These 593681 stub axles are £350 each per side. Can I get away with using a different & cheaper stub axle with the hub? Like FRC8005 for example?

whether they have a slot or are type doesnt matter you just get the tab and thrust washer to fit, length will as will any machined location to axle ,id think they are interchangeable but i cant guarantee that
