Hi all

new to this forum just wondering if anyone has had this problem when replacing a cambelt.

I have a landrover defender 90 1989 model. It has a 200TDI engine that has done 75,000 miles.

The belt snapped whilst my engine was ideling outside my house after a long run home. (50 miles or so)

Engine died as I went to pull away, engine would not re start but did turn over. I rekon I turned it over 6 or so times before giving in. There was no loud bang ect when engine died or after.

Changed the belt Saturday as I have done before on another 200tdi. All timing defo. right checked and checked again however engine fires turns over but runs very lumpy on idle with loads of white smoke from the exhaust. I gave it a little (very small amount) of throttle engine runs better but loads of white smoke.

I have checked fuel injection and replaced the push rods as well as checking the rocker.

ANY IDEAS......... *sigh*

They normally bend push rods or break rockers so you don't have to take the head off! Normally!:D
Have you done the clearances! They have hydraulic tappets but you still have to set the basic clearance. White smoke can be pump timing. Otherwise you are faced with taking the head off:(

FAIL manual tappets on 200 and 300 tdi's

I thought it was strange too! But I've come across it before on fiats too! A normal looking pushrod engine that have adjustable tappets yet they're hydraulic?

I never knew that. :scratching_chin:

Well I certainly don't know anything of the sort

I am going off what I was told to be fair. So possible?!
funnily enough were i used to work we did have some hydraulic tappets that replaced roller follower in tdis so unlikely but possible ,you should see bent valves by turning engine over while setting tappets ,any adjuster that hasnt about the same thread showing above the nut is an indication somethings not right on that valve train

Hah so I'm not a complete muppet after all:D I'm sure it was an ex land rover guy that told me ages ago! Maybe got a tad confused and it was some oddball engine he was on about!?!?

when i done my cambelt on me 200DTi
that had bent 3 or 4 pushrods.
rockers all looked fine.
hydrolic lifters/cam followers - unknown..

byt the look of some of the bent pushrods,
they had been bent before, and straightened again...

in fer a penny, in fer a £..

I got me best pushrod straightening hammer out and "carefully" straightened each pushrod.
to be fair, the middle sections are made from soft metals to shock absorb I guess,

it all went back fine, ran fine for about 6 months,
until the other week when I got a funny knocking noise from the no. 1 cylinder.
I suspect either damaged piston or cam follower/lifters in no. 1..

Still runs as normal tho`...........lol

so, head off time when it gets warmer/blows up/which ever comes first.. :)

Okay, so all soted hich ia goodnews.

The pin in the bell housing was not TDC so timing was wrong.
Thank you all for help happy landrovering...

:D
good news then..

just goes to show that when your stuck between a rock & a hard place,
with no one to talk to,
LZ is your prayers answered.

sometimes the simple explanation is lost in a fog of the mind,
so a distant clearer mind can see much clearererer your problem..

now, my toenail infection guys......................................................
