cam timing..making it adjustable..low cost way

Id have naturally gone with cam sprocket, don't know why, it's just bigger, easier to handle, easier to adjust finely!

no it isnt, they both are as easily or not to adjust ,its material they are made of ie std rover plastic sprocket isnt easily alterable but crank been steel is

the cam sprocket is all steel..gems type..it dont use standard type wood ruff key, but a locating "lug" on rear.no nylon teeth, steel

tg
hough now i see an issue..maybe..must keep sprocket (cam) cutouts as is for cam sensor to see and ecu to know where cam is..though looking at sprocket there is enough meat of "legs" to make it adjustable...still think crank pulley woodruff key relocating is easier..
anyway..will destroy a pushbike wheel tomorrow for two spokes to extend the dti's .one for piston tdc other for cam max lift on number 1

either way its only a matter of ensuring crank tdc is tdc by marking before and after and ensuring cam is spot on ,of which you can do the same with exhaust or inlet peak and use a 360 degree wheel to put cam to exact position from there

indeed...must sleep now..work at 6 tomoz...let you no how it goes...

well....thats a bugger..kinda...

set tdc..made sure was in middle of tdc..took ages!!(using tdc 1)
made 360 protractor..dead easy..1mm cutting disc maked at 0 and 108 dregree (cam peak)
removed crank woodruff key..made pointer from block to protractor (welding rod with point ground on end.
rotated crank to 108degrees
turned cam to max lift at number 1 checked was exactky on lobe center..again took ages ...
made sure chain was tensioned on "pulling"side
now checked to see where crank sprocket keyway and crank keyway were in relation to each other...

bloody exactly correct!!all that faffing about..could av just bolted straight in!

:D but it wouldnt have been if you hadnt gone to all that trouble still at least you know

hy

yep..sods law...still it savesd me making crank sprocker keyway!

Fett matey..you need to borrow the dti's?

yes!

happy 9th birthday btw :p

confused???

what you doing about rockers and shafts? you got new ones??i assume yes..dont bother doing tappet preload unless you have..
have 2 sets of shims left as well..thin and large..will enclose them too if required..

Sooooo basically we are saying that one should check/adjust (ideally with vernier pulley set) cam timing in every engine build instead of just bolting it all together and trusting the manufacturer?

yes zen all new and yes cos i lost my shim kit. u got the instructions too plz m8?

noisy i was tryna avoid all this if u remember but very hard to determine accurate tdc with the chain kit i have and after spending££££££££££ I want it bob on

I'm afraid the details have disappeared in my head, but yeah I can see the point, basically the cam timing check it to make sure the manufacturing/assembly tolerances are correct etc?
