Calling James Martin!

Hi James, I tried to pm you but couldn't even get that right. I spoke to the local land rover "specialist" about my steering box. He said he could weld the leak with a cast iron rod and was unsure that it could be braised. I just want to know for sure before I take it to him or try elsewhere. I just want to be 100% sure before I go there so I can tell him what can or cant be done to stop the leak. Cheers.( Although this is aimed at JM, other specialists are available)

So your steering box is leaking from a crack ? Why is it cracked ?

Cast iron is a right bitch to weld and to be done properly your box will need stripping down completely with no gaurantee it's going to work-Botch job

Get a new one it's quite an important part do you not think ?

I'm inclined to agree, my friends a professional welder and he's repaired a few cast iron bits for me in the past, usually manifolds, success rates vary from really good to oh **** it's just cracked in half! Steering is a critical component, I wouldn't mess with it, get a recon one, or a new one, or for that matter a good secondhand one!

It was a re-con from paddocks a couple of years ago. It isnt cracked, the leak is from steel? plug which was pressed in during manufacture I guess. As James said, I was going to drill it out and press in a new plug topped off with a braize or weld.
Im well aware that steering is important, i only noticed yesterday the cause of loads of free play in the steering, the tab on the drop arm bolt wasn't holding and the nut was about 5 turns fron dropping off! As you turned the wheel, the arm was pushing the rack more down than from side to side.
