Calling all TD5 90 owners...

Can one of you make a quick (but acurate) measurement for me please?

I have bought a full TD5 rear tank set-up to install as an aux tank on my 300tdi. On looking at it, it seems that the bottom of the custom made mounts are too low. But when I measure from the bottom of the mounts to the floor pan (~15") it matches that of the tank exactly so im sure the mounts have been fabricated correctly.

Can you measure from the lowest part of the tank to the floor pan please? and maybe some pictures if your not pushed for time? appreciated as always.

Looking forward to fitting this after i move house in 2 weeks

aw yer and whats the capacity? I think its 60L but can you confirm.

nope. I got the full lot through a member of another forum

tank/cradle/guard/fuel pump/sender/all hoses/ modified Y piece filler/300 TDI ARB mounts and guage.

what capacity is your tank shifty... thanks for your help like! what were you bidding on?

I was bidding on a tank + pump etc. It went for £51 and I missed the end of the auction. Bummer. I must sign up to one of those sniping sites.
The Haynes book says 60 litres but I reckon it is nearer to 55.
I never top mine off because I ride a motorbike and its one of my pet hates seeing diesel sloshing from fuel fillers.

Thanks shifty. I worked out a combined 110 litres then, so should get a good 650-700mile range on sealed roads. 600 miles worst case on unsealed routes.

Not cheap to fill 110 litres at todays prices though.

nope. But i only plan to do it when im on a bigger trip abroad. I only want the aux tank so i can remove the 2 jerry cans from the load area of my 90. frees up alot of space when fully loaded.

I can now drive from Calias to the alps without stopping! although 12 hours without getting out might do some damage!

So if I place a straight edge along the bottom of the tank then measure up to the floorpan somewhere in front of the tank. Is that what you want?

I was looking at the tank mounting Saturday and it seems to be around a 2mm plate steel bracket essentialy enclosing a plastic tank. Is that what you mean?

If so I'll measure tomorrow for you if you like.

got it in one Graham,

The 2mm steel is the tank cradle which holds the plastic tank. Just wondering how far off a fixed point (floor plan) the bottom of the cradle sits at its lowest point. no need to use a straight edge, just eye it up with a tape measure. Im sure an original TD5 mounts higher, it looks heigher anyway. I hope im wrong and this is all going to fit snug and fine.

Just worried about it catching offroad. Luckily its been supplied with a Simmonites fuel tank guard. The bloke i bought it off gave me the pictures below. check them out.

Can you also tell me what holds the TD5 tank to the cradle? I have been told its just wedged in there! but this does not seem safe with potential for 60kg of liquid to move around without baffles.

Without measuring that looks about right in the pictures.
The tank is just wedged in between the mounting plate (cradle) and the underside of the crossmember that supports the rear floor between the wheel boxes (not the main rear crossmember which sits behind the tank). As its plastic it dont have any bolts or flanges etc like the older steel ones. Even if it were able to move you're only talking milimetres.

I'll see if I can get some pictures tomorrow as well as the measurement. I think the tank is just cradled and not bolted / screwed or anthing.

I read somewhere that there is a strap? I may just use a ratchet strap

Shifty, i think i know the cross brace you mean, the tank is moulded so it slots into it. hopefully this will be enough. need to put a 90 degree bend at the tank end for the filler and then weld another bend onto the filler assembly. then i will be back here asking about wiring the sender, guage and 12v transfer pump. All the hoses are there, it just needs putting together. cant wait.

but it will have to, i got to move house 1st! hope to have this completed sometime in July, along with some more VDO guages

Hi Griff,

The tank comes as low as the bottom of the lower supports on the tow bar in the picture above. This means it's abot 13" deep from the bootom of the tank up to the bottom of the bar supporting the floor across between the arches.

cheers mate, sounds about right. that cross breace is about 1.5" thick anyway so it must fit fine. Just wanted to check prior to setting it all up.

Bringing this back to the front, Can anyone tell me where the breather goes from the tank? I have a short (300mm?) section of 6mm nylon hose with a U bend in the end. This is as well as the fuel filler breather. I dont want to just have it on top of the tank as we do alot of wading. Does it go somewhere special?
