Caliper Bolts

    Hi All, been trying to remove my front calipers today but the bolts are siezed solid.
    My question is, how much force can i use to remove the bolts ? Has anyone ever snapped them off or could i be the first?
    Thanks for any reply.

    Are you talking about the actual caliper sliding pins with the rubber sheaths attached?

    Yes I have sheared them off before.

    Actually i think you are referring to these two bolts.

    Tip that has helped me when removing other bolts on other calipers, jack the disco up and have the wheels turned to full lock so you can attach a socket and breaker bar. This bar will then extend out past the wheel well allowing you to put nice gentle pressure on the breaker bar bouncing very gently harder and harder. If they are still not budging slide a barbell from a bench press weights set over your breaker bar, now you might have a 5+ foot bar. The power of this is amazing and needs little force applied by yourself to get the bolts free. Obviously add loads of wd40 too.

    Thanks for that. Its the two bolts holding the caliper onto the hub. soaked the bolts in WD40 and will try again tomorow.
    I just dont want to snap them !

    hit head of bolts hard with soft drift ideally brass and suitable hammer not a girls one enough times they will loosen,dont snap them if you can help as they arent std 8.8 bolts they are harder so more difficult to drill out ,apply loctite on threads when refitting,relaxing stretch on bolts by hitting them does work

    Don't bother with WD40, its a water dispersant not a releasing agent.

    Get something like Plusgas which is designed for the job.

    A handy tip I learned to get bolts loose is to crank it a little tighter before releasing, this can often break the grip of the threads.

    I have had this problem on an early Ninety caliper bolts but I ended up burning them off with a high heat rod on the arc welder!
