Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum so I'll briefly introduce myself. My name is Sam Kelly, from Preston in Lancashire and I'm a Landscape Instructor at Myerscough College. I'm a keen falconer and currently fly a 2008 male Harris' Hawk at rabbits and pheasant. I've always wanted a Defender and since some idiot ran into the back and wrote off my beloved Jeep Cherokee 60th Anniversary Edition last month, I think now is the time for me!!

I've got about £3,000 to spend, and have seen a few Defenders that I am going to view tomorrow.

My question is, what should you look for when looking to buy a Defender?? The ones I'm looking at are 1988 and 1990 models, 2.5 diesels.

Many thanks in advance,

Sam

yea, dont get a 1988 TD!

if you can go for a 200 or 300tdi engined landy, and make sure the bulkhead is solid, and the chassis doesnt fall apart when you poke it with a screwdriver / hammer or similar

yea, dont get a 1988 TD!

there's absolutely nothing wrong with getting a 1988 TD

i'd much rather buy a tidy 90/110 than a battered rust bucket of a depender

condition is everything - there's next to no difference between the TD and N/A engined 90/110s compared to the newer (and much more expensive) 200 engined dependers, dropping a 200 in is easy, far far easier than replacing rotten crossmembers and chasing the tin worm

I also said about that, but on his budget he could get one with a 200 or 300tdi.

of all the engines in the 90 / 110 / defender, the one i would stick away from is a TD. the older N/A's are fine, and the later stuff, but wouldnt wanna touch a TD, had too many mates with bad experiences with them

your missing the point - what engine is it it is a bit irrelevant, the TD is a good engine HOWEVER it needs sensible and regular maintenance, along with the understanding that you'll not get sport cars performance from it

what would you rather have a well looked after original TD engined landy or a used and abused 200 engined one ?

ha i dont think im missing the point at all, all i am saying is that for his budget he could look at getting a 200 or 300 tdi, and if he can find a decent one its worth getting because in my opinion TD's are a bit of a crock of ****e. from my experience it is a fair bit more unreliable than the TDI's and the N/A's and give more headaches than they are worth

what's the point of having a nice reliable engine, if the chassis is riddled ?

when buying a depender go for condition first, if it's got a 200/300 engine then thats a bonus

condition is everything, the engine is a bit irrelevant

you must have not actually read my first post then - i quite clearly stated the bulkhead and chassis are bloody important ;) but for his price range he can get himself a decent TDI engined non rust bucket

but no you are quite right, may as well not go for a tdi despite him easily being able to afford a decent example and instead pay over the odds for a TD :D:rolleyes::doh:

i've read all of your posts on this thread - this is the line that i don't argee with as it's misleading

"dont get a 1988 TD!"

cant really be bothered arguing anymore, ive put my point across, if he chooses to go for a TD despite his budget allowing for a decent TDI then fair enough, his call

yer an i got a 89 110 (with a 200 in it)

there's nowt wrong with a 80s landy !

nowt wrong with any landys, i got ones form every decade cept 40's 80's and 00's - i just dont rate the TD!

i'm not arguing, just pointing out that your comment was highly misleading

don't be so touchy

wunt bein touchy in the slightest, in fact i found it kinda funny that we were arguing over something that trivial

Ere I got a 1988 TD...ya cheeky bugger, granted it now has a 200tdi in it now.

haha fair nuff

but out of interest, if your budget woulda allowed for it, would you have gone for one with a 200 or a 300 if it were in good nick?
