Hello people I'm chris from co durham, hoping that one of you will give me a bit help. I have got a budget of £5000 and am looking to buy my first 90 defender, have looked at a few but were rotten and no history. Dont want to get ripped off as it will be my daily commute and used for wild camping at weekends, apart from bulk head and rear cross member rot is they anything else i should be looking for, thanks.

Hi,

Get one with history! mostly want to know cambelts been done and that its been serviced etc, if no proof of this and you really want it then get it changed, garage would charge £200-300 ish i think.
Bottoms of doors rot, propshaft play etc, check that its not been heavily patched up on the chassis, maybe a good job done but would say lots of patches mean its probabaly getting near end of chassis life.
Off road damage to axels / steering though need to be serious to damage stuff badly.
For this budget shop around you should be able to get a pretty decent one, again its all about the rust.
would expect 12 months MOT and good service history, if its only got a couple of months left it aint likely to pass, walk away lots of them out there in this price range.

Thanks for the advice steve, will take on board what you have said, been looking at a few but were rotten, guess i need some patience, lol

Definitely take ya time, check out ebay, autotrader, piston heads and even classic car

Will give you an idea of what you can get for ya dosh, prices vary enormously, dont be swayed by lots of bolt on toys either, good if ya want them but its all about the base vehicle condition.
Good luck with the search :)
