Hmm - Although I can see your point - only time will tell.

History doesn't always bear out your theory of newer models being better, or worth more, than their predecessor.

Would you rather have a 1975 Jaguar XJ-S or an E-Type? Now that really is a no-brainer.

I consider the TD4 Facelift to be a classic in the making.

I'm keeping mine for another 30 years just to see. LOL :p
same here mind you i am getting old so more than likley will not be here in another 30 years or even ten with my illnesses

i used to drive my mates RR silver cloud they are just a overgrown arm chair but with plenty of power, with all the speed cameras these days what do you need all the fuel guzzeling power for any way , i will stick to my latest freelander which i have not even bothered to put any spanners in , it really is that good , touching wood by the way.

very true , what a fantastic motor they are , its just a shame they are a pain when they go wrong:)

It least the Fl1 is still fixable for the home mechanic with a minimum of special tools!! New LR's need al kinds of dealer equipment, much of which is outside the diy budget!!
Don't forget that almost all Fl1 problems are well documented as are the fixes ;)

As someone already stated this is a great read and yeah, I have pretty much made up my mind and gone for a good fl1 as opposed to a cheap fl2. Although we have gone for a slightly cheaper (£5800) 2005 model which is the HSE in Epsom green with beige leather which just seems to be an almost perfect colour combo. Most importantly is a 1 owner, 70k car with full history and just looks honest. Admittedly I'd have preferred a lower mileage as the vectra we're chopping in us an 08 with 40k on it however from what I'm told its not even comparable and providing the td4 is looked after it should return the favour?

Any thoughts about mileage?

Sounds a nice car.
Me I'd be fitting a Bell VCU and new support bearings strait away and change all to oils too. Eg IRD , rear diff and gearbox. This should help prolong the life of the expensive bits ;)

Mileage is fine, the only thing to check at that age is the VCU, and as you are in the West Mids, Bell Engineering are right on your doorstep and if you visit them they should be able to do a transmission health check while-u-wait :). Can't go far wrong with young TD4's :).

Nodge beat me too it :D! Good point about the transmission oils, very important to get them done it makes a huge difference!

Cheers guys. I know it last HA an oil service 10 miles ago (by the dealer) but ill get the gear oils done straight away. Is the best way to quickly check VCU the reversing method. I seem to recall its reverse on full lock (any direction?) then dip the clutch and see if it rolls or suddenly brakes. Is that right?

Hippo's torque test will tell you if it is proper fecked or not but only the pro's will be able to tell you just how much life is left in it. I'd stick a new one from Bell on anyway, 70k is when they should have been listed for renewal in the service schedule.

If the tyres really are evenly worn then you are gravy, Pirelli's are one of the best for road use you won't put a foot wrong. Sounds like an excellent Freelander mate!

Congratulations on your new purchase, I'm sure your going to be very happy with the Freelander 1. I bought mine brand new 7 years ago and have had no major problems at all. The only thing I have had changed were the two prop bearings, and to be honest they did not need changing. I bought two tyres that were a bad match for the car which resulted in a droning noise and vibration and was told by a garage the prop bearings had gone. Other than that I have a break light switch which needs changing and thats it.

The advice given above about being able to do the repairs yourself by Nodge68, is spot on, I used to do all my repairs on my car's until I bought my first Vauxhall Vectra, but with the Freelander happy to be able to tinker around with it again.
