The girlfriend's car (1999 Rover 220 diesel) has reached a point where it barely runs any more (she drove home last night followed by a stream of smoke!) and coupled with corrosion and a slipping clutch it isn't worth repairing, plus having to deal with more issues when the MOT is up soon.

Therefore we're just wanting to replace it and as easy as we could get another small hatchback for around £500 with 12 months MOT, with our first child due in a few weeks I would prefer to buy a larger vehicle... Such as, oh I don't know... A LAND ROVER!

She likes my Discovery but would prefer something a bit newer and is concerned with safety as the baby will be transported in it.

I was thinking of a Freelander but they are quite widely hated and the petrols have the usual Rover head gasket issues so I'm a bit reluctant.

I've got £1,000 but could stretch to £1,500 if it was the right model/year. If anybody could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
